Al Kaplan has passed away :(

I learned a lot from Al, he was an inspiration and always helpful.

Tonight I'll roll a cigarette and have a cup of coffee take a couple rolls HP5 to shoot in memoriam.

Al passed away on the same day as Miss Kitty, our beloved cat of more than 12 years. Miss Kitty will be Al's companion now. She will sit in Al's lap and sleep beside him. And Al will take care of Miss Kitty.

I miss them both terribly. The world is a poorer place without them.

Ever since this sad news came to us, I have noticed there's two Al Kaplan-threads featured on the RFF home page. One is this thread, the other is the t-shirt fund raiser thread.

Shouldn't we get rid of the latter? At the time, it might be rather inappropriate to sell t-shirts with Al's face on them to pay for his medical expenses...?

I just gave a day or two ago - I hope the money can be used to make Al's family a tiny bit more comfortable in this sad time.

Best to you, Al, and family.

Reed

So sad. I unfortunately never talked to him personally but like so many others I have enjoyed his posts and photos here, on PN and on his blog tremendously over the years. He was funny, enlightening and inspiring. I will miss him.

Ohh this is so sad, I will always remember him, what a great person he was, and also was one of the veRy first Photographers (ON THIS SIDE OF THE POND) who ever talked to me about Leica IIICK Grey's, while he had bought one back in the early 1960's and sold it a few years later (we used to joke about the price, but $400 or so for a old beat up WW2 camera was a good sale in the mid 60's, and he had always said he wished he'd had kept it...)

Al will be very missed my condolences to his family.

So very very sorry to hear about this. Just found out a few minutes ago.

He asked me to take a photo of me right next to a print I got from him, and kept on forgetting to send it to him. That's all I can say now.

RIP and godspeed, Al.

Condolences to the family... I've known Al only through his posts, and found him to be a fun and cool guy to be around with, and was hoping to meet him one day... sad sad news. He will be missed.

A great loss to everyone

A great loss to everyone

I, too, express my condolences to Al's entire family. I never met Al, but, as many others before me have said, he was a great inspiration to all of us. He added humor, intelligence, experience and enthusiasm to "our little world" of RFF. I had made plans to visit him in Miami later this month. He will be missed.

I was really hoping he would pull through OK, this is a terrible loss for his family and for this community. My deepest condolences to his loved ones to all who got to enjoy his passion for life and photography.

[FONT=Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][FONT=Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Hi Robert,

Just to let you know, I gave the family a printed copy of your email and they will get back to you.
As you can image, it has been a severely traumatic time for them, not only in reacting to the sudden events,
but also for getting necessary arrangements put together, etc., etc.

Rest assured they are deeply appreciative and well aware of the kindness of the RFF group and postings.
Jonathan has your e-mail address and will be contacting you directly as things get sorted out.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and patience.

As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

rest well...

rest well...

our family condolences to his family and friends. may he rest well, in peace.

...and hopefully, he will teach those angels a thing or two about human insight and humor and grace and grit.

his threads and posts will live on here at rff and hopefully his website will remain as well.

happy trails,
kenneth

I'm also saddened by this, but I stayed away for a while, as I also go by Al. Now that I'm over the foreshadowing of my own eventual demise, I can post here that we'll miss him here at RFF, maybe almost as much as his family will.

Rest in peace Al Kaplan...

It takes a few days to get through 11 pages of posts about Al!

Well, I'm in the club who only pm'd with him briefly, but always enjoyed his posts and had recently started checking his blog infrequently. I will certainly miss his wit, wisdom, and kindness.

Al was extremely kind and helpful person. My condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed very much by everyone who had the privilege to have met him - either in person or in Cyberspace, as I did.
