Announcing Book 2, Step 2 Time to get to work!

Ralph and Gene, thanks for the timely answers. Think I'd leave out my Xpan work for the book, though it's my favorite camera at the moment. Haven't quite mastered the panoramic portrait mode just yet.

If you have the 90... show while you are working on it please🙂

Joris, you are in.

We are no longer accepting additional participants, the project is getting really big, but emails we have not had an email request in a day or so (which is good), so everyone who has replied to date is in.

I apologize to all others who would like to join us, we simply cannot manage any more participants. Thank you though for your support and keep your eyes open for book 3.

Hi Rover,

Just checking to see if I got my note sent to you on time. Am I in?

Mark, yes, you are in.

At this time we simply cannot accept any more participants, this is a very big project at this time, but we did decide to be as inclusive as we can, and everyone who replied in those first few days is in.

My fault, I should have sent confirmations (note to self, next time...), and now am a bit swamped at work, but we will get some additional communication out to everyone soon. We continue to discuss layout options and requirements. Keep your eyes open. More will follow very shortly.

So impressive how quick this project has been developped.
In a matter of few days, the idea was suggested, the decision made, invitation published, rules defined, deadline established, and now photographers are shooting while a team is working on the layout. Simply amazing.

It shows once again that will and passion are the best engine of such a project. I hope I'm in, and anyway I'll shoot as if, since it gives me an extra motivation to carry my RF with me.

Thanks again to Rover to coordinate all this, and if ever I could help in any way, please don't hesitate. I'm a bit scared since I'm in China until before Christmas, therefore I'll access my scanner quite late in December, but shooting is the most important part, isn't it?

Well, better look around than type on my keyboard. Sorry for this too long a post just to say Thank you !

You are in, and have the longest name in the book!!!!😀

I just finished the list, it has been a busy week at home and work. I will start sending emails this weekend.

It is safe to say though, that everyone is in.

We cannot take any additional participants, but those who did reply are in, everyone, it is a big project.

Thank you very much, Rover! Should I include my second and third "first names" ? 😀 We're going to beat the guinness book of records then 😉

I've been myself away in Paris, taking photos 😉
Thanks again for the reply!

A little help, please?

A little help, please?

I need a bit of technical help here, folks. I'm going to hire the scans done of my two photos and, frankly, I really haven't got a clue about this process. All the shots in my gallery here are taken from the CDs I get when I get C-41 films done. I specifically need some help about what to ask (the company/person that scans for me) to get back. If I'm submitting JPEG files, should the original scan be a TIFF? Which I then use to get to the required 300dpi? I'm slowly learning the GIMP and otherwise have no "digital workflow"
Or would I be better off getting prints made as I want them and then scanning those to meet the submission requirements?
Any help is VERY welcome!
Rob

don't scan prints.. the quality difference is like putting a soft-focus (portrait) filter on your lens.. if need be, there are a few people on here, myself included, who can scan your negs for you if you want to send them over

you'd need to ask GeneW what he wants for file formats.. but I always save my high res images as TIFFs.. JPGs are fine for viewing online, but the compression process inherent to JPG format will rob your image of some detail.. usually just noticeable if saved repeatedly, however

the thing is, if you plan to email the files to rover or Gene, you'll need to save them in a compressed format since TIFF files will be more than any email system can handle.. JPG is the standard for that, altho PNG files are supposed to be better

if you're going to a professional lab to have high res scans done, they'll probably be able to give you the proper format for your use and you won't have to do anything with the scans other than forward them to the RFF gmail account.. I'd still ask the lab for TIFF images first.. then, JPG if they'll include them for free.. they should, IMO, considering it'll take them a whole 30 seconds per image to convert them

now, the question I have is..... if the images are color, should they be RGB or CMYK?

oh.. as for file resolution.. I'd suggest having it scanned so the final image is approximately 8x10 at 300 dpi.. again, Gene will know for sure

Thanks, Brett! The file I submit will be(as asked for) a 300dpi and 7'' on the long side. If my photography were better, I'd just get full frame scans at that level and send 'em in. But I will want to be able to adjust cropping and possibly contrast, then save at the required size/resolution so I guess I'll need a bigger file than what I finish with.
I appreciate your offer to scan the negs but I'm going to be very picky about results and will be more comfortable paying a stranger--in case of my being a big P.I.T.A. 😀

You can also send specific questions like this rff.forum@gmail.com. Gene and RayPa monitor that and will respond. I know enough just to tell the person at the processor where I will have my scans done and trust they do it right.
