Announcing Book 2, Step 2 Time to get to work!

ok.. to sum up that link... this is what should be emailed to Gene:

7 inches long side at 300 dpi

JPG files at 'maximum quality compression'

RGB or b&w images at 8-bit

i've got a question about scanning. I have a low end scanner which can't quite do the job and i'm not sufficiently clue'y about scanning to do so either.

i got the photo lab to scan to CD when i developed my film there, but even then there were scratches that showed up on the soft copy.

I've only ever used my neighbourhood photo labs and normal c41 film.

what's the best way of scanning to get the image quality/size required?
In particular, any sydneysiders with recommendations on which photo labs to use?

i'm still out shooting to find photos.... any suggestions/recommendations on film choice if that impacts the scanning/ overall quality? at the moment, I'm using XP2 super.

Maybe your Sydney friends can point you to a specific place. I too will be going to a local lab to have my negatives scanned. They do a pretty good job so I trust I will have good results. Normally they scan the negatives and do not make adjustments, I do that at home. Have them scan the image larger than necessary and save it to the size you want after making your adjustments.

A general question

A general question

hi,
I submitted my scans at the 25th od November, and an additional info concerning my prio at the 26th of November and i have no confirmation yet if it arrived well at the publishing team and if it was all O.K. so far.

Having a quite clear imagination of how the publishing team sinks in a flood of work at the time I'd nevertheless would like to ask you kindly for a short note if my stuff arrived well.

Thanks a lot ! 🙂

Bertram

My Bio, two photo submissions and the caption information were submitted per the web site instructions.

However, I never received a confirmation they were received. Is this a concern or is everyone going to be notified later, or...??

The project organizer is quite disorganized at this point.

My place of work is reorganizing (not bad news) and I am getting lots of new work and some job security as a result. Add in the holiday rush and I am swamped.

That said we are moving forward and will get this done. We had a bunch of emails this morning as a matter of fact, so all please be confident that we are still here and the book is still and will always be a big GO!

I have a question...what resolution is a 300dpi scan? When I take in my film to get it printed and scanned, is that a premium scan, the mid level one or a low res scan?

Looking at the list of luminaries, and knowing the work of many of them, I am feeling quite inadequate.

But I get to keep really good company! 😀

Hum hum, I think I'll propose some outrageously OOF pic's claiming it's Art (probably the best I can do...)

PS: I just did some rolls that were meant to produce materials for the book, and guess what? A disaster!!!

Mark, I am in there with you as far as feeling inadequate. The point though is to have fun, and to be able to share what are our "best" shots.

Last time I just told my processor what I needed and they did it for me. Maybe someone more technical can add something here.

Is it better to have the scan made larger than necessary and then after we do our post processing save the file to 300dpi and the appropriate size?

it is always easy to downsize the image, while the other way around always degrades quality

Uh oh... be careful with generalizations. 🙂

Reducing the size of digital images DOES degrade the image if done incorrectly.

I was downsized once, I felt very degraded. Oh, wait. You meant photos. Nevermind.
