Being right or being smart?

I missed all this and I'm glad I did. I mailed off a book on collecting vintage cameras, a pair of Kodak darkroom lights and a Jupiter J-12, and it made me happy to do it. End of story.

I have been deleting one thread at a time, but I need to delete many more threads that I started at RFF.

With 9001 remaining posts, I'm quite sure you'll be here for a while Raid. Why not put all of RFF on "ignore" for a week and see it your attitude changes?

A couple of thoughts:

- I still don't understand how Pixtu's thread first became a thread for trading and then escalated to being closed. That, more than Raid's leaving, is really very sad. And, BTW, my stuff will ship next week. But it's the last time I contributed to anything charitable here, I rather donate to the local fire-fighters and other non-profits.

- when RFF is being called a "forum for affluent Leica snobs" there is some truth to it. That's why it hurts. Gone are the times when moderators and established members were fond of their Canonets. And being an "Anti-Leica" (e.g. ZI), or user vs. collector snob is just the same.

what we miss out on is the hidden nuances conveyed by the spoken word, gestures, facial expression, tone of voice.

There were no hidden nuances in what you posted at Nelson's.

Roland.

I still count this closet give a way a success. Like the poster stated above. He got the chance to try out a Canon FD system. Many of us were blessed with the opportunity to give something & to receive. a few guys are getting their first Canonet. Others are getting a lens that they have been wanting. One RFFer who is out of work is getting a lens & I think someone is sending an adapter to a owner of a M3 that couldn't afford to buy a lens. Thank you Memphis for speaking on this brother RFFers behalf. No telling how many others were helped. So even with all the trouble we had, compared to the rest YES...it was a success...thank you Pitxu.

I'm going to pack a few boxes this afternoon, and plan on doing the Post Office thing Tuesday morning. It's always bedlam there on Mondays. While I'm at it I may as well ship my broken Weston Master V off to Quality Light-Metric.

I'm cleaning up an old plastic milk crate I found. From now on whenever I run across an unwanted piece of photo related gear I no longer have a use for, into the crate it goes.

Just a reminder: If any of you have a working film SLR check with your local high schools and colleges who have photography classes. They all seem to be looking for them.

The dénouement was unfortunate. I have thoughts on how things might have been addressed but I'll keep them to myself.

What was fortunate in my case was in getting to know several very nice people all around the world, from Taiwan to Holland to Montana. Thanks to Pitxu for giving me permission to participate in his thread.

This kind of bickering makes me think of a particular xkcd strip, entitled "Internet argument":

If "they" only had the opportunity to see the collection of stuff really getting passed around they wouldn't say that! I guess I missed all of the Leicas being given away.

I sincerely appreciate the one thing I "picked up" but it is hardly rare, expensive, valuable, or particularly hard-to-find. Nonetheless, the giver didn't need it and I can really use it. I'm very appreciative.

I'm not hurt, your not hurt, and RFF isn't hurt by "the reputation" from my perspective. People often say that I'm too thin and too green... why do I care what they think... I just roll up into a clay ball and roll somewhere more to my liking. ;)

Oh... there's a kid on the TLR forum needing help. I think I'll roll over there...

Roland.

Pitxu asked Joe to close it. I don't blame him for it. Good decision, especially after a member started a thread "Pitxu sent me this PM" & posted the PM for all to see. Crazy.

I missed that one ... Oh well. Got to go burn some film ...

Funny you should mention that. I was thinking a Rokkor 40 would be a nice lens to weld to my new M6, but if I'm going to do that, why not just use a Canonet?

As to the rest of this nonsense: Let it go! This is the internet. It's a limited communication tool at best.

My 3 cents ( inflation and all )

Richard... a truly nice gesture and you don't deserve to be beat up over anything you did or said. You deserve to be commended.

Joe... likewise, you pointed out a puzzling inconsistency in raid's behavior and you don't deserve to be beat up either.

raid... you made an error and maybe you're a bit embarrassed, but you should put it behind you, maybe say "sorry guys, I got carried away" maybe not, but put it behind you, no quitting, no removing all your posts. That smacks of a child stomping their feet and saying "I'll show you..."

I think we got caught up in a feeding frenzy, the electronic version of like when Wal Mart opened on Black Friday ( Long Island, NY- USA) and the crowd trampled the worker to death in their rush for the bargains...

Perhaps we learn from it and take it a bit slower next time, if there is to be a next time... Or if there's a new giveaway we make a rule that to take part in it you had to have been a RFF member since at least November 2008. That way, no first timers coming here merely to take advantage of us.

Matthew 6:2
Another verse posted out of context. I've studied the Bible for over 20 years (KJV) is my preference. Bill if your going to make remarks using God's Word please use it in the right context. I could say to you the next time that idiot up north decides to put you or myself ( which he has BTW) on his front page, Read Matthew 5:38 to verse 48. Thats the context of scripture.

Dude, I respectfully suggest you get a grip. :) You can't make a post stating "Sally Mann and Nan Goldin stink" (or words to that effect) and not expect to get called on it. Temper your own remarks and you'll be treated respectfully in turn.

Dude: if you want to attack me at least quote me properly. You quote me incorrectly; I said "Sally Mann, who cares," and "Nan Goldin, whatever." Far cry from your quote. I never said they "stink." Big difference.

I don't agree, what can I say? Of course, I don't use the KJV, mine is the NAB. To me, Matthew 6 is all of a piece, and of course it has contextual ties to 5. But the lesson is clear - alms-giving, praying, and fasting, all should be done in secret, or one must ask oneself is one is giving to give or to be seen giving.

When I gave all the cash I had on me to the Toys for Tots Marine who was standing in the road in the snowstorm yesterday, I did it because I am commanded to do so, and because I wanted to do so. But by telling you, I've ruined it. Perhaps that's why I did it, eh? So I could tell someone? Maybe even so that I could reflect back on what I had done with pride. That's the trap, that's the question, and that is what makes giving a difficult proposition - if one is to give, and one wishes to honor God, one must divorce oneself from even feeling good about giving. Just do it, shut up about it, move on.

I don't get involved in the threads like the one that got locked anymore. Once upon a time, I was publicly castigated on RFF for not giving - the evidence being that I did not post a 'me too' in the thread. That ended it for me, I learned my lesson. If I give, what I give - I don't want to tell anyone.
