I owned MP for years which I do not think is perfect in mechanic at all.
The viewfinder is just a hole and used two tiny screw to hold the plastic ring threre. It is not sealed and collects dirts. Of course, leica can seal it using silicon.
The inside gear is not lubricated properly. I was told this by DAG while my MP had shutter problem.
Ugly ASA dial.
For meterless M I will vote M4, M with meter is M6.
Just my thoughts.

M4-P is the best.Well,that`s all I have anyway.Wouldn`t mind an M7 though.

Ride, dive, shoot.
M2 & MP with simplified framlines (essentially metered m2 with quick load) for me.

Used to think my ex-MP is the best till I tried the 0.91 VF and 50mm frameline on my new M3. M3 is the best. An M3, a rigid summicron and a handheld lightmeter. You don't need anything else for street walkaround.
Here's a few pics I took with my M3, Rigid and digital lightmeter.

the best M camera is whichever one any of us are fortunate enough to be holding in our hands. the only thing better than that is your next one.

I love my M4. Combines the convenience of the modern M's with the quick-loading and angled rewind crank with the rock-solid build quality and simplicity of the vintage M's.

I like my M4-P, it is a great everyday shooter. I have had the pleasure of using an MP a few times, and really loved that experience then I bought an M3! my vote is for M3, I just find it a lot of fun to use - feels good man.

M3 and M6 were neck and neck at 182. So I bumped up the M6.

The best M is the one you enjoy and like and use for photography.
Mechanically, I think MP and M3 are among the best of them.

I like my M6 TTL with MP finder. How about a category for hybrid model Leicas? And, where is the CL? It's an M camera. It may not be full-sized M, but gosh darn, put a Summicron-C on it and it might take some nice pictures.

Excellent pictures Eric, all of them come across surrealistic.
One of these, for me: M2, (new) MP.
After years, I still haven't decided.
The MP's Achilles' heel is the longer shutter release travel.
