'best' pocket camera?

balancing price and ability to produce excellent images...add pocketability to the mix...
something to carry 24/7...

If you meant shirt pocket, it's pretty much a Ricoh GR (shame about the 28mm focal length, though) the Sony RX100 series, or the Canon G7X.

If you meant jacket pocket, a Fuji X100s in my case. It helps my jacket is a Scottevest, which would probably qualify as a bag and thus belongs in your collection...

I've always wanted to try a Minox 35, but there are so many variations I don't know where to start. Plus I've read about shutter reliability issues too

I have a GL that developed a shutter problem, and was able to set it right following a UTube tutorial step by step. Not like I have any talent for this, but the common shutter problem can be adjusted by dummies like me with an hour's patience. All exposures in 2 rolls since, including flashsync, have been fine.

Back on topic: GR, digital or film. If film only, though, I prefer my Rollei 35s to my Minox for scale focus. B/c it's also about the Sonnar.

XA because it's so easy to fit comfortably into a pocket, because of its shape and clamshell design. I prefer the IQ of the Rollei 35, and also the Rollei's build quality, but the Oly is more convenient to shoot with, with its aperture-priority exposure. Loading the Oly is also quicker and easier.

The Rollei 35 is probably a better long term prospect, being all-mechanical.

iPhone 6 for the (jeans) pocket. It has replaced a canon s90 as my always with you camera. To get better (OK, sometimes just different) images, I reach for my m6, but that is carried in a very small domke bag.

Recently picked up a minty Lumix ZS40 for $250 and really love it. I rule out anything without an eye level finder including my iPhone for photography, and the ZS40 has a built-in EVF, not some clunky shoe-mounted doohickey. Oh but the kicker is the lens: 24-720mm effective. No that's not a typo. Seven hundred twenty millimeter. With image stabilization. The IQ is remarkably good.

When I shot film my pocket camera was a Leica IIIa with a later coated collapsible 50/3.5 Elmar. I have a Rollei 35 which I would rank second. It's a little bit fat/brick-shaped and bulgey in a pocket.

Canon S90

Canon S90

For many years, I carried a Rollei35. Bought in 1969, I still own it and occasionally use it. Tried a Contax T3 but never came to grips with it so I sold it. Now my Canon S90 is always in my right-hand pant pocket and gets a lot of use. It has the same chip as the G10 and successors. Incredible quality and it's really small. I have had photos from it published. Best of all, I bought it for $90 from a guy who writes camera reviews.
There are later models in this series -- S100 and I think S110. The main difference is higher video resolution. I don't shoot video so it does not matter to me.
Here is a pic with the S90.

This ^^^^. I'm continually amazed by the image quality of the XA, and it can fit in the pocket of a pair of jeans. I'm also increasingly impressed by what an iPhone can do. Check out the recent book of iPhone photos by David Hume Kennerly.

Yes the XA has been a a life saver for me especially on trips where I have very limited space to carry with me. The XA just does the job!
