'best' user?

say you were looking for a bit of a change from your normal gear and a nikon rf looked good to you.

say you were a street shooter considering which model body and lens would work well and also be reasonably priced.

which would you choose?

Nikon S2 and 5cm f1.4. Cheap, great optics, small, .... only issue is that it isn't as quiet as a well-lubricated Leica.

Don't have wide range of experience, but I have been happy with my Canon RF as a "second" to my M3. It was relatively cheap (< $500 for body and 50/1.4 lens).

I did need to get the light seals replaced after a few months (they peeled out in Summer heat), but I could have fixed that myself. I decided to spring for a CLA as I like the camera a lot and want to use it for a long time.

Nikon S2 for 50mm lenses, Nikon S3 for 35mm. The prices on S3's are way down, almost in S2 range of a couple of years ago.

If you are used to Leica finders, the Nikon finders can be a disappointment.

That was it totally and I think Joe, having owned Epsons for a while and now the X100, would struggle also.

I think I was drawn to the look of the camera (handsome beast IMO) but the reality was it didn't suit me.

I wasn't wow'd either.

Canon P w/ 35/2.8 is a great voice too.

For a real change of pace, why not a Leica LTM, SBOOI and 5cm f3.5 Elmar? If it is street, guess-focusing should be "De rigueur"

all my lens are ltm...never had an m2...that might be a nice pairing with my 40 sonnar.

i had a nikon s2 with a 50 and liked it but then got to thinking that i really didn't need 2 systems...and sold it!

I like the S2 best from the Nikon RF series (having tried S, S2, S3, SP) but the camera is best with a 50mm lens. Despite the missing parallax compensation, the 1:1 VF is great if the RF patch still has some contrast.

If you really want a change and shake things up get a TLR with a WLF and a 1:1 aspect ratio!

Yes, the Nikon RF patch is fuzzy on the edges so if you prefer to focus with the edge for a split image, you'd have to get used to double image instead.

haven't you already been down this road once before, joe? i seem to remember an S2 that got purchased, promptly got its black covering changed to funky red leather, then was flipped shortly after. i remember wondering at the time if that camera got any film through it before being shipped off.... 😱

i did use the camera and i liked it...

but i may be chasing the wrong rainbow here...how realistic is it to think a film camera is gonna save my artistic soul?

though it is amazing how many folks think the x100 has damned me...

The X100 hasn't damned anyone but sometimes I think a person needs to put that sophisticated little camera and others of it's ilk aside and revisit the basics of photography. I think you're making a move in the right direction personally.
