Camera and Coffee

Well, I just figured I would post a shot of the kit I am doing most of my work with these days. Oddly, the more camera equipment I acquire, the more sure I am that the M system with an SLR supplement is right for me. Since coming to Japan, I have been using fewer lenses on the M's, mostly just the 50 and 35. In any case, I recently acquired a late 70s early 80s vintage Hasselblad kit. This is my first medium format SLR, and I really like it so far. The amazing thing was that the whole kit cost less than half of what a used ASPH leica lens now costs. Shocking. Not that the ASPH leica lenses aren't astonishing, but it is still a bit odd. Then again, I suppose if anything current Hasselblad lenses of the same caliber are more expensive than Leica ones. Anyway, on to the pic...my current classic kit. Leica MP .72 with 35/1.4asph. Leica M7 .85 with 50/1.4, ASPH, Hassie 500C/M with 80/2.8 C T*, billingham 445. That little can is what the Japanese like for coffee -- nice and cold from the vending machine. And of course, my favorite current film/developer combo -- Acros in Rodinal 1:100.

Thought it was time to share a couple of images of the beast. R-D1 with Mini SoftRelease, CV 21 D finder, CV 21/4, stock Epson strap. An absolute joy to use.

The big Canon (1Dmk2) is now more or less officially a safari lens. I find I use the R-D1 as often as possible - it doesn't seem to like the cold, though.

My thanks to GeneW for encouraging comments on my gallery.

Cheers,
Kirk

Stuart, is that Lieca blue under the Luigi case?

As for beverages in Japan, I prefered the warm sake' from the vending machines as a diversion from their excellent beer, also available from vending machines on street corners.

Yes sir Frank, that is a gen-u-wine blue M7. I had an a la carte done right before the price increase. The thing is great, even smoother than the MP, and I love the AE. Sacreligious, isn't it? Here is a picture of it in the blazing socal sun: http://www.stuartrichardson.com/blue-m7.jpg

As for the sake in vending machines, I have not seen that! Maybe we are too much of country bumpkins up here in Hokkaido. Our city has a mere 2 million, nothing like Tokyo or Osaka or Yokohama. We do have beer and cigarettes in the vending machines though....I will keep my eye out for sake.

Way to go! Talk about discreet!

I suspect it was you, a year or so ago, that dissuaded me from getting another digicam in favour of a DSLR. It was good advice, if rather expensive!

John -- yes, that is not the camera I use if I am trying to play it cool. I go for the black stealth MP or a Hexar AF. But I comfortably walk around on the streets of Japan with the blue M7...no one has commented yet. The hasselblad gets more pointed fingers and laughs...

pass the coffee

pass the coffee

Hi
here is the "pass the camera" Canon along with my canon demi17EE which while not a rangefinder is a fine camera. the symbol on the glass mug is the chemical bond diagram for coffee, cute huh?

I was surprised how well it has stood up to it's travels, i have added a lens cap to it (just a cheapy i am afraid) to help it stay nice. it still has it's case and lens hood too.

My Iskra 2

My Iskra 2

Just got an Iskra 2. It looks to be working well, except for the meter. I am waiting for the first roll, to see if there are any light leak problems, the bellows looked good. Only a little over 6000 of these Iskra 2s made, so maybe this Russian rangefinder is indeed "rare."

Now what to do with my two other folders, Agfa Isolette's with the Apotar and the Solinar. Nothing wrong with either, I am thinking about sending one of them to Jurgen Kreckel for some hot-rodding with a new red bellows and a makeover.

Andy advice on that? I don't think the Iskra2 should be modded if the bellows are good.
