Access is the most important thing for this kind of shooting.
In other words your photos looked like everyone else's, which is fine for the purpose of illustrating a one-and-done news story.
I appreciate seeing something new and fresh and not at all like "everything else."
There's room for both, and the above is not meant to disparage the news media, but let's be honest, you could just about interchange 99% of photographs made for the AP.
One can also tell a story using different mediums and tools to accentuate certain things. I can think of some allegory related to the "otherwordly" colors shown here.
