Having boatloads of tourist and acres of rose colored diamond fields helps tooThe Australians may have learned some very sensible economic principles from their Asian neighbors rather than their currently less successful Euro/Anglo ancestors.
Yea, and all those large salt water crocodiles to protect them if Milton Friedman & Chicago Boys should start mingle in their affairs.
I think the Australians are doing the only right thing. Most of their export is raw materials. The more they sell, the less they have left. Then it is important to make the best of just every ton of it.

Olsen, sorry if I disappoint you but I basically agree with you! We are in dire straights here, almost as bad as Greece, and the bank/Wall Street bail-out was a travesty. I don't believe in socialism for the few either. However I also don't believe in it for the masses.
David,
That's good to hear. We are not all Marxists over here in Europe. Yet....
_A small dash of socialism would make life far more pleasant for the lower middle class and the poor. - Not just the bank managers.
We've had a small dash for a while now. It's on to bigger and worse things now.
Happy Dependence Day everyone!

It's also when America loses it's military might, as the funds will not sustain both the Nanny state and the military.

The sooner that happens the better. Then the US can finally stop interfering in world affairs. Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Taiwan, Vietnam, Panama and Cuba to name but a few.
Yes, won't it be great to see America reduced down to size? I'm sure the rest of the world will enjoy it as much as you will, dfoo.

Very interesting, my friend, how you have interpreted the meaning of these polls and claim they have nothing to do with a dislike of the healthcare bill.To what do you attribute the results of the recent Massachusetts, New Jersey and Virginia elections? Here's a hint: it had nothing to do with personalities, Fox News or misguided voters who just did not understand the wonder of BHO/Reid/Pelosi. The proof will be in the November elections.

That's simple.
If a person is not satisfied with the Government in Washington, that does not mean that he/she is against the new health care bill. It includes also other issues. Like lack of jobs.
It is a long time till November. In political terms. I wish president Obama well.

That is also a myth.
The 2. largest military power of the world after USA - is Europe. As Olsen writes: 'NATO is a corrupt weapons monopoly' that costs us billions in extra cost. So much for 'free market' and 'competition' when it comes to weapons.
That said; we all, both Europe and USA spend all too much on defence.

Well, just got back from the hospital with more bad news regarding my wife's health...I am really too tired to weigh in here. So this will be my one and only post on the matter. Take my viewpoint not as one who votes Democratic or Republican but as someone who views them all as liars, crooks and not worthy of our trust but they are a necessary evil, I suppose.
Digitalintrigue and remphoto have been arguing that the new Health Care law is bad. I agree. Seems that everyone who is arguing that it is good is not a citizen of this country yet the "facts" presented are more than the majority of citizens here have heard and whether they are true or not, I simply don't have the time or energy to research. Believe me, no one really knows what is in that new law or the unintended consequences that will result. And yes, there will be unintended consequences.
All I want to add to the dialogue is the fact that Obamacare is not health care reform. It is simply the left wing move toward socialistic govenment which is the antithesis of our government since its inception. Is it good or bad? Depends on who you ask, but the figures clearly show that the majority of Americans believe it is bad law and that it has the potention of bringing our economy down. I tpersonally hink it is bad and I have watched this past year at how Obama and the Democratic party have started dismantling this country brick by brick and spent, what, multiples of trillions of dollars in one year, far more than anyone before now. The numbers I have seen are staggering.
Americans, for the most part, have always wanted maximum freedom and security with minimum government intrusion. Our government has a terrible track record on public programs. Now, this new law flies in the face of basic conservative Americans.
While Obama has focused entirely on this health care issue, he has done NOTHING about the rampant unemployment situation or anything else in our economy. The unemployment figures where I live are officially 11%, but when you analyze what is left out, the figure is double that! NOTHING this administration has done or IS doing has addressed the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Why the hell bent effort on health care this past year? It could have waited awhile...at least until our recovery was well underway.
My guess is, it has to do with politics and paybacks.
Few people really know how vulnerable we are at this point in time.
That's it. I am spent. But, have a wonderful time with all the diatribe. My attention will be elsewhere for the forseeable future.

Finally, a guy from a country with a decent government!
Possibly the only country in the world with a sound policy of finance. The AU$ is probably the strongest currency in the world right now. Thanks to that the Australian government and central bank understands that when the international banking system is down and just about every nation in the world is drowning in debt, - the price of borrowing money should be kept up. We are all in awe.
Canada must be doing something right also as the Canadian $ has risen to 0.97 US. Must be all that national health care driving it up. Ah well, just saying. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose on the exchange rates.

David,
The Zeiss'es are made in Japan. God Forbid! In these times we are in now, it is 'every man for himself'. But the Leica gear is utterly European. So is Hasselblad. - just a reminder....

Ridiculous! The majority of the money was already allocated and spent long before Obama took office.
If you want the US economy back on track stop interfering on other countries affairs. If you ask me, the US is now reaping what it has sown.
You know what I find the most hilarious at present? The current crusade at painting China the bad guy and a "currency manipulator". The US is clearly the worlds biggest currency manipulator. Furthermore, even if the RMB does appreciate the jobs are not going to go the US and as a double kick in the pants due to appreciation the goods we enjoy will all cost more. Its a classic trick of manipulation. Take the focus off the real problem; inept leadership, and rotten government.

Bob,
Absolutely! The Kiwi dollar of New Zealand and the Singapore dollar is also doing great, these days. I think it is utterly wrong for national banks/governments to keep interest rate too low, too long. Those countries with governments that have the guts to increase interest rates will be rewarded.

Uh...well, part of that is true. The socialists did take over Congress in 2006; Obama didn't take office until 2009. Obama was part of that Congress, however.
Here is how the numbers break down in terms of the rate of debt of each party.
Treasury figures show that neither party sets a laudable record by any stretch of the imagination. Going back to the beginning of the decade, when Republicans controlled congress the rate of debt was $41B/ month; when Dems controlled, $104B/month.
So, the socialists are running about 2.5x per month what the spendy Republicans were doing.
This is why I use tend to use the general term "Washington" -- because both parties are equally responsible for this mess; some parties are more equal than others, however.

It looks like the socialists were cleaning up the mess of the previous party:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_debt_by_U.S._presidential_terms
"By tenure, the largest increases in gross debt relative to GDP, to date, occurred under George H.W. Bush (+12.2%), George W. Bush (+11.9%), and Ronald Reagan (+18.5%)."
(Note that "up" is bad, "down" is good.)
