Do you use case with your Digital M?

I use the Leica Half case, and put that into a Nikon CS-9 pouch case made for the Nikon F2. The latter is leather, velvet interior, and was $20 new.

The CS-9 can fit a 90/2 Summicron. The CS-10 can fit the 10.5cm F2.5 with hood.

I use an old 60's vintage semi or full case for casual forrays with the family or street shooting with an old silver J3 sonnar. Very small and discreet. No chimping possible, so less attention attracted or time wasted with the family. I just pre-set the ISO to 400 and treat it like a film camera with a 501.5 attached. Very simple package. No need for a camera bag, which would be heavier and slower than just releasing the case popper.

If I'm on a dedicated shoot for landscapes, holidays, etc, then I want access to my rear screen to confirm a once-in-a-lifetime shot and I need access to other lenses than my 50mm anyway, so I'll use a camera bag and dispense with the case.

... I have a Luigi half case that makes the camera a lot more managable in my hands but it has the fold down flap which drives me mad on the occasions where I'm constantly checking results (chimping)...

I use a Luigi case with the removable back (four snaps) - and it is much more practical for digital photography (at least IMHO). The back is always off and stored away).

I have the Zhou half case, a Luigi case and Thums Up EP-1. Both are very nice; Zhou wins hands down on value. Neither cases are necessary with the TU. The TU 1's are shorter than the TU 3 models and are better for larger hands.
B/L is that a case isn't necessary with a TU (and perhaps even without one). Purely a matter of aesthetics and personal choice, assuming you don't throw your camera around.

I've been thinking about a "Thumbs Up" but I'm concerned about damage to the hot shoe in the long term.

Am I being paranoid? 😱

Or does it fit close enough to the body so it doesn't cause any issues?

It fits fine and so far my THumbs up is all scratched, but hotshoe is fine.

I only use a bag to get my M9 from here to there. Once out of the bag it is in my hand or around my neck. I started with a Leica IIIf years ago and to this day I have never used a case. I do use a "Thumbs Up" device that fits into the bracket on top of the camera. It has a place for your thumb that fills the void left by no film advance lever. It gives me a very secure hold on the camera and takes up very little space.

Yes, Zhou half case. It is luxurious. Having to take it off to get to the flash memory is a nuisance, but worth it.

A Luigi half-case with grip, love it. Very comfortable. Luigi's straps are also excellent.

Thumbs up has several models. One will fit in your hot shoe and has a hot shoe on top of the Thumbs Up that is functional.

I talked to Leica before I purchased my Thumbs Up and they said that the hot shoe is strong and that it should not be a problem. I have had them on my 8, 8.2, and now a 9 and never had trouble. The entire weight of the camera is not just held by the Thumbs Up it merely gives you a non-slip hold on the camera and steadies it for longer exposures

I used to with my film Leicas as I found that I liked the extra grip it provided. It also makes the camera slightly "fatter" and that helps too. Now I have recently bought an M8 I am considering it. But I have a Leica grip so it may not be needed. Still making my mind up
