Jay, I thought the RF baselength only impacts the focus on lenses with longer focal lengths. I guess I have to read up (or you can tell me ) why/how the RF baselength has an impact on lenses with larger aperture.

The RF baselength determines how accurate the RF is going to be. Long focus lenses and those with wide apertures (due to shallow DOF at biggest apertures) require critical focusing.

I got lucky. Tried a 1.5V alkaline battery and popped it into the battery slot. It just fit in. Didn't need to put in additional o-ring, rubber, etc. Meter's working. Could have been converted already? The seller didn't indicate.

How far off are the meter's reading, given that the battery is 1.5V instead of the original 1.35V? I read in some fora that it's two to three stops off but they don't say if under or over. I suppose over?

How well the camera fares on alkalines depends on its circuits. Some circuits don't mind the higher or fluctuating/dropping voltage, some do. Those which do would often work right as long as the battery puts out the required voltage and can slowly falter in function as the battery power drops. Only tests can reveal this.

Regarding meters, the behaviour described above applies. Most of the low-priced CdS meters had to be fed with the consistent power which only mercuries can provide. They tend to be accurate when the batteries are freshly installed, then accuracy goes out of the window when the power starts
fluctuating. The reason why it's not said where those two or three stop differences go since a mercury-powered circuit can either read high or low with an alkaline cell.

i also wished you were there with us last night, annie! it was a blast!!! his studio waiting room was warmed up by rf enthusiasts and friends. and there were hot stories of great old rangefinders and slrs and tlrs and lenses each has seen, held or used ... and jay just happens to have one stashed in some cabinet and he would show the camera or lens that was under discussion! well, not all but for an amazing number that were cited. and, annie, i was able to hold his J3 and J12 which were supposed to be under lock and key! and i did not dare ask if they were for sale or even loan.
for intermission, some pinoy and american 78s were played (and he has a cabinet full of them -- both 78s and the players!!!) it is not just a studio he has; it is also a museum! i never thought that such a haven of wholesome audio and visual delight exists in that area of quezon city.
the only regret i have is not being able to stay long enough. i had my wife (aka gatecrasher) tagging along because we had four parties that evening!!! so jay's party was #2. and we had two more we had to go to. it was a crazy evening of social commitments. and i write this with hardly any sleep yet because of all the food i ate ... i feel like a stuck pig! but no regrets, i finally have a face to each of the names whom i have wanted to get to know better in this forum. it was great meeting you wam, luis, kat and jay! there were others who are not members of the forum i think ... like timmy and ... (the name slipped -- the guy who promised to help me find good and reasonably priced M3s in hong kong next time around) and jay's friends and fans. and, too bad i missed ditoy by a few minutes. (good luck in the filmfest, ditoy. hope to meet you in the papers). and i hope to meet you sometime later too, annie. and lastly, thanks for the PaRodinal and for being such a generous and gracious host, jay. i wish i had taken some photos but i was just overwhelmed by all the great cameras and shooters that were already there. (btw, who won the Fuji NPHs and the colpans in the raffle?)

Yes, Jay's studio is fun to visit. His photos, his collections are such delights! Eh, I was awestruck when I visited his studio last year - speechless ako!

Did you talk about the films that you like? Aside from the EFKE 25 and Lucky?
How about the exhibit featuring photos taken with RF's?

Just curious, what do you use for fixer for the paRodinal?

Eddie, likewise. I wish to meet all you Pinoy RF'ers and film enthusiasts. Baka makauwi kami by April...but I'm not really sure, being a corporate slave.

It was nice meeting you guys. Thanks, Jay, for hosting the get-together. I learned a lot--not just about photography, but also about film (who was it who explained re: optical film, etc.?) and the record thingies. I'm amazed something that isn't plugged to an outlet could play recorded music.
