We are all guessing...
AND, I am sure if OVF focusing-aids are available, the Fuji marketing people would be the first to mention it. No deduction on my part needed.![]()
Except that:
- even if the camera is "for photographers by photographers [and some engineers]", the marketing is still going to be poorly-translated drivel written for the unwashed masses. And I'm not guessing there. And
- we've all acknowledged that the firmware is the least firm portion of the development so far, and that EVF focus aids superimposed on the OVF is a purely software issue. The hardware's definitely there. Given a rough knowledge of the hardware's workings, I know that I personally could program an EVF focus patch, and the Fujifilm developers must be light years ahead of me. ...right? The gritty details of the focus aids are going to be the last things that "firm up" about this camera—that, and the colour of the highly user-friendly menus, of course—which is why they've danced a bit around the subject so far. I'm guessing we will see a focus aid of some sort on the OVF.

Who spoke very little english. Which makes me think that someone at Fuji is going to sift through 60+ pages of RFF chat on this is... like wishing the X100 had interchangeable lenses and cost <USD1000.

Yeah- they will not sift through 60 pages. Summary:

That's the BJP interview linked earlier. I know the designers spoke very little English, but going by the questions, neither did the interviewer.

You see, with AFS you half press the shutter, it focuses and it stays there until you press the shutter again. With AFC when you half press the shutter it continues to focus. So with those two options and a fixed lens, why on earth would you need manual focus? But then if the light and contrast is really out of whack and you must manually focus then you can simply go to EVF option and its done.
You're expecting Fuji to make you a M9 for $1000. I'm afraid you're wrong and your high expectations are misplaced.

As I said, AF doesn't exist to me. If 99% of the other photographers in the world are capturing "the shot" with AF, then they certainly don't need me to. I'll stick with doing it the way I enjoy doing it, thank you, with all the unique qualities and slight misfocuses that that entails.

I recently noticed, while sifting through a hard-drive of images for my first Blurb book, that my photography has changed since I begain using the Lumix G1 micro-4/3 camera, with EVF, in early 2009.
I'm now prone to using selective focus and depth-of-focus as creative tools, like one would with exposure and composition, rather than as a mere exposure moderator. And my use of selective focus isn't limited to the binary paradigm of either wide or narrow focus, but because the EVF enables the photographer to constantly monitor DOF during composition, up to the moment the shutter is tripped, the quality and amount of selective focus can be continuously monitored and adjusted.
This is a fundamental difference from the way that selective focus is previewed and controlled with SLR and rangefinder cameras, one that I believe will change photography; it certainly is changing the direction of my personal work.
So, while there remains certain properties of rangefinder focusing that can't be emulated by an EVF system, the live-view EVF itself opens up new creative opportunities.

The EVF on the Olympus EP2 is incredible. Using the EVF as a focus-patch overlay for the OVF would work quite well.
I'm fairly excited about the Fuji camera. I will buy one for a carry around camera, a digital version of a Canonet or Minolta Hi-Matic. Drop in in a camera case instead of a flash.
I'm excited as well and I will buy X100 for that rangefinder feel of it if nothing else, and if the OVF is really a let down i could use an auxiliary VF. I just hope the AF is fast, there is no shutter lag and image quality is on par with other DSLRs at this range.

look here now, whats the difference between moving a ring to focus and pressing a button to focus? isn't it a little OCD, all this obsessing over manual focus.
when you photograph the camera should disappear. try to think like that, it might help. lol

No, he's not. He's expecting Fuji to make a camera that is in several key ways better than an M9, for under $1000.
If my camera disappeared then the film would be ruined. Talk about a massive light leak. Bad enough when a little foam rots.
I prefer manual focus. I like shimming the lenses that I use. But I just got back some really nice shots at the beach with the Leica Mini. It did a good job. Drop it into the beach bag, great for quick grab shots.

When in doubt, READ and THINK. I do homework...first.
Talking about a camera based on what is known is quite different from arguing what it should have been.

Hey Frankie -- Are you saying that you agree with me, or that you disagree?
Well- I suspect the SDK and sample source code will not be included with the CD included with the camera.
So I am going to have to trust Fuji and/or Frankie to do it right.

Fuji X100, the first open source camera in the world!
But seriously, first we had to contend with Leica owners, now we have this resurgent group of we-want-leica-experience-on-the-cheap-digital-camera crowd to content with. Life is getting harder and harder...

You really get spoiled by writing your own embedded firmware. Things work EXACTLY the way you want them to. And if you don't like something, go in and change it.

My expectations for this camera to replace a Leica are well founded and quite reasonable.
But I will still use the Leica Mini on occasion, even after getting the Fuji.
