Also picked up a 65/8 and GL690 at the same time. Bad GAS attack. But the lens was billed as a copy in unusually good condition for its age, and the camera was a cheap, dusty and rusty old thing which I intended to keep as a backup...

Turns out the performance of the 65 was terrible (a chronic condition among 'overhauled' or 'rebuilt' WA lenses, it seems) and I sent it back, while repainting and cleaning out the top plate of the GL690 rendered a camera that works better (dark slide release is snappy & strong) and has a clearer viewfinder than my original G690BLP. The front shutter release is pretty great, too.

Now I just need to get my hands on a good wide angle lens. I've got another 65/8 on the way, I just wonder if it will be any better. Everything but the standard lens for these things seems hard to come by, and what seems to be available at the moment isn't in great condition.

I'd like to have a try at the 65s. Got a GW690 and its wide normal is quite nice Dante Stella wrote nicely about the GSW's 65mm. Sometimes I carry it on a backpack and cycle around, not that heavy.The GW doesn't have the silenced elegance of the GL though.
There are some cheap ones from Japan. Craving a rolleiflex but may it be a Japanese shinto signal for getting another one to have a complete lunatic kit for a trip to asia?

Inspiring is Tsiklonaut's work, search for him around here as he is a RFF member. He did a round the world on a BMW GS and his main camera for the expedition was a Pentax 67. Whenever I feel like complaining about carrying I think about it. 😀 (Motorbike does most of the work though)

I complain about the paucity of 65's for the G690s, but there're always a lot of GSWs. With those, you get the (possibly better?) 65/5.6 and a free camera. You just can't take it off of the lens. I've got half a mind to send the incoming 65/8 back if it isn't stellar (i.e. mostly free of haze & fungus and more or less optically centered) and just sit on the money until I've got a chance to scoop up a 50. After all, the 50 and 180 are the reasons I chose the older interchangeable-lens model camera in the first place.

Regarding the 'silenced elegance' - maybe it's just the shutter in my 100mm, but while it lacks a loud clack as the GWs are purported to have, it does make a higher-pitched 'twang' sound each time it fires. I have a Nikon FM that makes a very similar sound. It's not shocking, but definitely loud & unusual enough to draw attention.

Wow, looking at those photos makes me VERY glad that I live in Florida (we were at 77 today).

I had one of those for a brief time. The shutter, as mentioned, is inordinately loud (I thought of it as the Fuji Clack, and all their cameras that I owned made this sound to a greater or lessor extent for some strange reason). Don't worry about that attracting attention though, because it was hands down the biggest camera I ever owned. Yes, people did indeed stare when I went out w/ mine.

I sold mine quickly and bought a Voigtlander Bessa RF w/ an uncoated Heliar lens that was tiny in comparison and took stunning photos.
