yeah... most of this conversation is going above my head... have a job in the industry and don't really have to engage online with people who should otherwise be on twitter/mental institution. i never noticed anything other than talk about gear / function here but i don't spend all day online. i think some people need to get out and shoot. Unfortunately the majority of the internet, including websites i've loved and frequented for their on-topic content since i was a kid getting into film, seem to have become indistinguishable from the comments sections of various news sites. sad really, the way ego and opinion has taken over. But I guess not surprising as it is a simulacrum of the type of pettiness that is performed publicly in the political and entertainment world. we crave op eds and cultural commentary now that most of our basic needs have been taken care of by rapid liberalization of first world economies.

for those who missed it, in this long thread
Helen's outrage about Frank being allowed to sell again in the classified was her own misunderstanding.
He was not allowed to place ads or use this site again. Neither was Frank unbanned, nor allowed to re register.
In fact the classifieds which upset Helen so much were placed by Frank using another ID -- BART BART with SAME Avatar and pics as he was banned under, BLACK BART. Those ads have since been deleted, and BART BART banned. Both IDs looked almost alike, and could easily be mistken for each other.
Thinking that I had allowed BLACK BART back, without even checking with me or taking a look at the memberships (which she could have as a mod), Helen started this Ciao thread.
Helen also knew Huss and KoFe were banned temporarily. Yet she writes as though their bans were permanent -- knowing they were not.
Helen writes about Ned being rude in the past, but Ned never did anything ilke this CIAO post in an effort to upset the membership.
Apparently Helen might be a tad stressed, like most everyone else in these difficult pandemic times. I wish her well.

Two words to summarize why I don't want to do that: Data Aggregation.
By itself, the content of what I post to RFF is of no great consequence, but RFF isn't an isolated island: if combined with unrelated activities such as search engine history, online purchases, activities on other sites, I expect that a moderately good aggregator could amass and infer a far more detailed picture of myself than I'd knowingly share, and I'd have no control over how the data was used. Would you knowingly tell the world that you owned some expensive toys, tell them your physical location to within a few meters, share your biometric data, and when you were not going to be home?

That's a problem that needs to be dealt with as well. Congress is beginning to pay attention to this internet behavior. Hopefully privacy will win the day. Today, as users, we keep winding ourselves in knots to protect ourselves on the web. I think you can see that this is an unwinnable situation unless we stand up and do something about it. Write your congressman!

I don't think you can throw out that bath-water without also tossing out the Facebook/Google/Twitter/Instagram/Spotify/etc/ baby too! Nor can you readily retrieve what's already out there.
On a tangentially-related note, at my previous IT job, we had a meeting with a firm that wanted to sell us a pricey network security product: They were using Apple notebooks and iOS devices exclusively, and when I inquired whether they used "smart" devices like Alexa-enabled speakers in their own homes, they looked aghast at the thought!

Helen's husband passed away a year ago and this must be a very stressful anniversary, especially since we are all physically and socially isolated. I only hope she remains safe and reaches out to someone when she needs.

I agree that is very confusing. Misunderstandings are very common and cause a lot of stress unfortunately.
I was under the impression Bart Bart was banned from the Nazi related comments in this post: https://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171656
That post was just a month after George Floyd and BLM strengthening. I remember feeling quite upset Bart Bart was around.

You knew otherwise when you wrote it.

I need to start this post by saying that I don’t have an agenda, or a “point” I am trying to make by asking what I am about to ask.
I never saw the posts in question by Bart Bart, either in the thread mentioned or any other ones. And it isn’t possible at this point to go back and evaluate it myself, as all his posts have been deleted, near as I can tell.
My question is, did this person claim to be a “Nazi”, or admit that he thought he was somehow an actual Nazi, or was this just a label applied to him by others?
I’m just curious, as the answer to that would help me understand some of the discussion here a bit better.

You are absolutely correct - I have not seen Bart Bart refer to himself as a Nazi. Of course posts can be edited, so you have to have faith this is accurate, from post 24:

His instagram page was very aggressive, I remember the recent post was of him giving a speech while pretending to shoot his gun. I think he was banned from IG too. That with the "germans shouldn't be ashamed of their past" in a nazi image related post lead me to believe there was sympathizing.
What was the exact reason of that person being banned? Not sure.
