In principle, I agree. However, what happens very often on discussion forums is that "free speech" becomes "speech that I agree with" and any speech from those who hold contrary views is denounced as "hate speech" when, in fact, it is not.
I write this as a general observation of many forums over many years, not as anything related to this particular thread or what preceded it.

Trouble is, all this talk of free speech is not what our forefathers (Owain Glyndŵr) would have recognised. Meaning people face to face but nowadays it can be the same silly slogan printed and posted a million times and then reposted. So it becomes something Dr Goebbels would have applauded or, at least, recognised as propaganded.
Worse still, we cannot retaliate in kind without very deep pockets no matter how abused, frightened or distressed we are. And then the hangers-on decide to flame people and threaten them and so on.
It seems to me a little balance is needed rather than a blanket approval of the principle.

I don't believe any camera hype, unless it can make me breakfast in the morning, as well as shoot images. I want waffles with a mixed berry compote, some really good salted butter, a sausage patty, two eggs fried over easy, some hot sauce on the table, and a cup of hot coffee, thank you.
I was badly burned (monetarily and time lost) by not one, but two faulty Leica digital bodies (M8, M9) and was harrassed by a few here and in other prominent email lists, for saying that Leica digitals are trash. Their customer service for poor working photographers such as myself who hadn't spent more than $50,000 in Leica was equally as bad. I stand by both those statements. I was never banned, but I disagree with a lot of BS about the latest and greatest. Maybe it's because I'm not as active here as I used to be, who knows.

In Australia you get the tea but you also get a slice of toast with butter and vegemite on it. And if you cannot stomach the vegemite (only those of us raised on it can - people who were not raised on it apparently think it is something like Surströmming – Scandinavian rotten fish but it is actually more like eating a handful of jet black rock salt) we revoke your visa and send you back to your home country on the next plane out. It is taken as clear evidence that you are in the country illegally. 😀

Phil you are obviously a vegemite sinner but I forgive you as it's perfectly understandable in the circumstances. 🙂
I think the secret to eating vegemite for those unaccustomed is to think of it as Soy Sauce in paste form. In other words as a salty and "umami" (savory) condiment and (believe it or not) a flavor enhancer to be used in miniscule amounts especially by newbies. In which office it serves very well indeed. A thin scraping of vegemite on hot buttered toast under poached or fried eggs is delicious and has the added benefit that extra salt is seldom needed.
But those who have tried eating it thickly spread on anything have my sympathy. And my apologies - many Aussies tell newcomers to the country to eat it spread thickly as a perverse kind of practical joke on them. Or perhaps to convince them never to eat it again so there will always be more for born and bred Australians to eat. 🙂 As Aussies of my generation would have started eating vegemite soon after they ceased taking mother's milk its now the habit of a lifetime. I suppose you could say its a kind of crack cocaine of condiments. 😀
(How this ended up in this thread I will never know but it is one of the joys of free range conversing on RFF that topics wander about and take new and unexpected journeys all the time. I suppose it's like one of those holidays overseas where you have a loose itinerary - but fail to stick to it and instead keep taking side road diversions just to see where it leads you.)
