We are not freaks. Just enlightened spirits. I too, have many of the metal screw-on hoods. Aren't they great? You can just leave them on, and cap them with a generic snap on plastic cap. To quote Einstein "Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities." So Richard, I urge you to come out of the closet. It's no longer a stigma, or an abnormality to possess superior knowledge and skill.......

Russ....you're right..it's time for me to throw of the shackles forged by stigma and lens-hood-fear....and stand, proudly in the light and declare to the world: "Ich bien Ein Lens-Hood freak!"

Just for that..here's a photo of a 1960's ROOIA metal lens shade on my M3 and a ASTRON metal shade on a black Olympus 35SP..

Joe, this is a great place for vintage lens hoods (hmm, I really shouldn't show this one to Russ...it's like putting a kid in a candy store....):

http://www.vintagecameras.co.uk/hoods.htm

Noticed they have a 43mm black astron hood there as well - and a lot of 'hard to find hoods'....

Another cool place is: http://www.the-camera-house.co.uk/5.stm

Those site's are weak. I don't need help from across the pond. I procure said lens hoods from all over town. There are many small camera shops, well stocked with drawers, bins & boxes of used and new camera gear. We also have our share of camera shows and swap meets. If you give me a particular size, I'll keep on the "da hood" lookout for you. It's like shootin' fish in a barrel. In the same fashion, I've acquired some way-cool small flash units for the rangefinders too.

ok russ, i need a hood, actually 2, for my 2 oly 35rc's - that would be 43.5 and then just a regular 46 mm one.

i found an original hood for the canonet, in an original box even!

The 46mm is fairly easy. The Oly RC hood is the only hood that I had to get the original Olympus made one. A guy in Australia sold me my Oly RC hood for $5.00. I'll look around, and I'll ask the Uassie mate, if he has another one. The 46mm ones fit my Ricoh 500G and Viv EE models.

i kinda remember having the oly one. i bought one of the cameras new and, being me, i can't imagine not having bought the shade at the same time. but my memory is not what it once was...

the only shades available around here are rubber, which i don't mind but only in the more popular sizes, usually starting around 49mm.

thanks for looking, joe

The rubber ones are too funky and wide. Don't they interfere with the focusing patch? The Olympus made hood for the Oly RC, was designed especially for that lens. It has the thumb-screw mounting setup, and when not in use, you can reverse it to fit ove the lens. I leave mine in the attached ready mode, and cap the lens with a generic snap on 52mm cap, which fits perfectly. Give me time, we'll snag you one.

Speaking of lens hoods, what do ya'll use on the Canonet QL17 GIII? It's got that oddball 48mm thread.

Another question: if you can find a rubber hood, should it be trimmed? Most are set up for 50mm not 40mm and I'd think there could be some vignetting unless it's made a little wider?

I've been wondering what kind of hood I could get for the QL17 ...

Yup, Luton Cameras sure got some good old-new stock... I think I got one of my shades from them. I just emailed them with a wish-list and it turned out they had most of what I wanted (old filters and shades) - still in their original boxes and for what I considerd fair prices.

Well if this one fits you can buy all ten and then all the canonet owners here can get one each! 🙂

Or..just buy one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43479&item=3833377555&rd=1

Note: Not sure if it fits.

Those are the metal screw-on, "Sonia" brand of hoods. They are good ones. I highly recommend them. "Sonia" also makes great wide-angle screw on hoods for SLR lenses. I have a few different "Sonia" hoods. They're well made. They are made in India. I am in the process of placing a bulk order for the Kiron Lens Klub. Perhaps the RF group should buy a lot of 10 or 20 of them, for member's.

Gee, I apologize for startong this hood thread. It's just that they are so conduscive to better images. Pay no attention to NWCANONMAN, he's old, senile and well into the latter stages of Alzheimers.

Get one of the 48mm metal screw-on hoods. Leave it on your camera, and you can cap it perfectly with a cheap generic 58mm cap. This works great for me.

I'm in for one if someone buys the 10 while I am away.

Where are you going? Which rf's are you bringing? I'm assuming that you'll be burning Neopan 400! What will we do in here without your knowledge and levity?

Russ, "in da hood"

I am heading up to the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I will be traveling with the Bessas, R and R2. Standard set up will have the 21 on the R and my CLE 40 on the R2. I still have a stash of old film, I went crazy with film sales last year, so I will be burning through as much old stuff as I can. When that is all gone I will be making a film shopping list and try to keep a fresher stock.

Knowledge, um, I can fool some of them some of the time...
