Hey folks, World Football Cup started

Sorry Rover, didn't mean to put muck in any post (not too sure what muck is in this context but am happy to apologise if attempts at humour were taken the wrong way.) I do like Football, but not as much as Rugby League or cricket. The World Cup however consumes us all, it is the largest sporting event in the World and attracts larger audiences than even the Olympic games (so I read).

Can a player in (ice) hockey get sent off permanently, maybe for attacking the ref or something? This reminds me of an amusing story about a West Bromwich Albion player of the 50s who was sent off for kicking a referee in the backside. When asked why he had kicked the ref in the backside he replied, "He turned round at the last minute!"

Still, with only 5 or so players on the ice, losing one is, proportionally quite a big loss. Losing a player in football is, surprisingly often not as bad as one might think. The team will tend to pull a forward back into midfield, for example playing 4 in defence, 4 midfield and one up front as opposed to 2 up front. They can therefore maintain numerical parity in key areas of the field, keep players behind the ball and look to attack on the break, when the opposition have pushed players forward. Hot weather affects the equation somewhat.

Bring on Sweden!

shhhh!

shhhh!

Silience, silence, within 20 minutes from now Argentina vs half Yugoeslavia.

trrrrrrrnnnnnttntnnnnn, trrrrrrrnnnnnttntnnnnn, trrrrrrrnnnnnttntnnnnn..........

See you in two hours, or next month,

Ruben

Yep, spectacular.

The Serbians weren't even all that bad, but Argentina was just incredibly impressive.

6-0!

You rarely see soccer (football) played at the level Argentina demonstrated today ... some of its goals were works of art. But even Argentina will have trouble maintaining this level ... it was that exceptional.

Argentina played incredibly today, I'm so proud of living in this country right now :)

Hey welcome to the fold mike kim.

US v Italy, me thinks that after tomorrow I can support Italy without any conflict in my heart.

Lets not forget that Serbia & Montenegro only gave up 1 (one!) goal in all of their 10 qualifying matches for the World Cup and they finished ahead of Spain in their group. Admittedly they had lost their best central defender - Nemanja Vidic - but still Argentina were sublime today. You do wonder if they can keep it up or if they have peaked too early already. The idea with a long tournament like this is to start slow, but Argentina have a very deep and well balanced squad so maybe they can keep it going. You have to admire any team who can play like that. It was an awesome team display.

Hrm, Ghana leading 1-0 vs the Czechs.

Wonder what the Czechs will do next game, their attack missing Baros, Koller, and now Lokvenc as well?

Win, of course!

Or maybe they won't... At least they got to keep their keeper, who saved them from 5:0 almost single-handedly.

Ghana plays IMHO by far the best football of all the African teams in this World Cup. The 2:0 was just a great goal.

Are you a betting man? Odds are (and statistics show) you shan't have any conflicts. That is, unless there was too much limoncello and chianti at l'Azzuri's last night

USA 1 - Italy 1

USA are giving a good show, my first time I see USA as the underdog. Let's see if our USA RFF membership are up to it.
Meanwhile I see just some solidarity from Scotland.

After that ugly strike of the Italian on the face of an USA guy, upper justice claims for Italy loosing this game.
