 They (KEH) absolutely SHOULD NOT get a windfall for the exact same reason you're telling me the OP shouldn't.

Shame on the gas station for not noticing until it got to $50,000. Survival of the fittest. They were stupid and paid for it.

I'm not saying my scenario with regard to KEH is what actually happened, but it certainly is a possibility. Kind of just stirring the pot with one possibility. I know even if I kept quiet in a similar situation it would nag at me and nag at me forever.

George, this isn't up for debate. The OP is doing the right thing. Nothing else enters into the equation.

I don't think it was a big deal that I informed them. I know that if I didn't, I would have felt guilty.

What is ironic is that this is the SECOND time it has happened to be. The first time was when I bought a lens off Ebay - a sonnar 85mm AE. The shop (not KEH, but another) sent me a Makro-Planar S 60mm. When I got the lens I contacted them. They were very happy that I noticed this, because they did not realize that they sent this wrong lens, and someone had just purchased it on Ebay. They paid for return shipping and sent me the correct lens. They also, in a gesture of gratitude, gave me a $56 rebate on the lens I orginally purchased.

I don't expect a "reward" from KEH either. It is just something that happened. MAybe they will let me keep it, maybe not. If not, it doesn't matter. I will be happy with the orginal D 28 I was trying to purchase in the first place.
 
How would you feel if they sent you a 3.5 when you asked if it was an 2.8? I know I'd be trashing them. Call them back and ask them for the serial number of the lens they sent, then ask the speed, then tell them what they sent you. You might see if they really have any 2.8s in the store today. Might have been a mistake to keep you happy (one can hope).

You are doing the right thing, but I will keep my fingers and eyes crossed that KEH will some up with something special and not ask you to pay any freight from this point on.

Silly question, how much would you be willing to pay extra to keep the f2? Figure in two shippings and some people time on their end. If they do not offer it ask if they will cut you a deal. Odds are they will as it is in their system as a 2.8 and to the accounting group they are fine with what you paid for it. Just a thought.

I certainly wouldn't want to stick it to KEH as I've purchased from them before and was very satisfied with the goods and the service. On the other hand, I would stick it to an oil company in a heartbeat. Funny thing is that the gas station owner got screwed out of 50 large and had to eat it. If an oil company made a mistake, like lets say running a tanker aground off the coast of Alaska, they would immediately turn the loss in to a huge windfall. For every dollar they lost they would bang the consumer for three. I'm sure Captain Hazelwood was well compensated for his navigational error. I feel better now Thanks. Stu

That's what I was saying. What if it was in their system as a 2.8 all along? Then they surely didn't pay someone for it being a 2.0. Why should they get an $800 windfall from the buyer? It'll be interesting to see just how honest they are and if they do the right thing.

BTW- reread what I wrote. I never said to steal the lens from KEH.

Hi navilluspm,

I applaud your honest and integrity, although I acknowledge its hard when something like this happens. I hope KEH ensure that you feel good about your conscientious approach. Whilst we all have our own levels of honesty towards others, it can pique if we feel that we in turn have been 'taken advantage of' because of it.

Please let us know what happens...
