I've got an epson digital that I haven't shot much since I bought an M8. If I wrap this in plastic with some silica gel packets, how long do you think it would remain operable? What would I have to do to keep the batteries going? Is there anything that could actually degrade?

In storage, it should last a long time, yeah... but
digital cameras have horrendously shot working lifespans compared to classic all-mechanical pieces.

I would not store it with the battery/batteries in the camera. I would be concerned about leakage.

The camera might work in 30 years, but the batteries will be shot and you won't find replacements for them - not for the Epson batteries anyway. I would not collect digital cameras (and I am a camera collector and digital user) - they won't have the same appeal as an old Ernemann or Exakta camera. If you don't use your Epson RD-1, then you should sell it.

Well...
I don't know how really long are the new digital's lifes.
Only old things can stay for decades.
Anyway, don't store it with battaries inside.
... And I want to see the photos from this one in like... 25 years... When some super 25 giga-pixel-3d cameras will be around
