Canon M39 M39 screw mount bodies/lenses
Don't forget e) The hood is capable of swallowing small children whole.

Sadly, I don´t have the hood (and no small children either). The shop had one in stock but it they wanted more than 200 EUR for it - easily more than half the price of the naked lens

Which is too bad, because as I understand it, there are no cheap/widely available alternatives?

Are there really no alternatives? I also am dismayed at the rarity and price of a simple lens hood. I need to contact some ebay vendors, surely this cannot be so hard to fabricate.
Anybody know otherwise?

I have the original hood, but why not search on eBay (international) for 55mm vented hood. Prices start at 6,99 Dollars :)

The trouble is finding one that doesn't vignette... I've seen it mentioned that practically anything screw-in thicker than a slim filter will vignette on this lens. The original hood is 57mm slip-on with a tightening screw, if I'm not mistaken?

It seems that the dedicated hood for the Olympus OM 55/1.2 (but NOT the later 50/1.2) is a good fit but those are not cheap or plentiful either.

BTW, could you measure the original hood for us - the diameter of the front opening and the length of the cylindrical shading part should be enough. It would be useful for either a DIY solution or looking for a good alternative.

Length is just under 25mm, inside diameter about 78.5mm.

Has to be said that the fixing screw is a pain (literally) in the thumb - it's very close to the part of the hood that flares out and doesn't extend much past it; and it's not a particularly secure fixing mechanism.

There are a few good options in 57mm clamp-on hoods from the classic rangefinder era. The best is for the Yashica Electro 35. There's also one from Petri that's nice. Neither should vignette on the 50/1.2, as they were originally for 35mm lenses. I believe there's also a good one from Minolta, but I've never gotten my hands on it.

Lovely shots!
Regards to the hood, I bought a B+W 55mm screw in hood, have not received it - but I will test it out see if I got any trouble on the lovely lens.
