All this talk about XA's just cost me $61 (includes shipping). Bought one on ebay last night. Includes flash but no battery.

You XA users please tell me what battery (batteries?) I should begin looking for.

Thanks,

Ted

Ted: If you're talking about the camera's battery, I believe you need to seek out an S76 silver-oxide battery (or two...I forget how many it takes).

As far as the flash goes, it depends on which model: the A11 uses a single AA (also based on fuzzy recall); the larger A16 uses two batteries, is a bit bigger, and, of course, has a bit more "oomph."

I voted for three choices: I keep an Olympus 35RC and a Canon SD880IS in my car, and my iPhone 3G is always in my pocket on my belt, or within arm's reach. Strangely enough, I find I get a much higher percentage of good shots with my iPhone than anything else.

Barrett, thanks. The flash is an A11. I used to have an XA, and found it to be the least obtrusive and threatening camera I have ever owned.

I always have my iPhone with me, if nothing else.
99% of the time I also have a Kiev 4a with B&W film loaded in my hands.
And if I know I'm going to be doing landscapes/closeups/anything the Kiev can't do, I take my Nikon FM with colour film.
I usually shoot 400; it works well during the day & at night.

Just shot a test roll with my XA. It definitely qualifies as a pocket camera. I guess "pocket" means one located in a shirt, trousers, or jacket. Leica M series and their clone Bessa series don't strike me as qualifying (unless with a collapsible lens).

I have a very small full HD video camera I carry in my pocket (Army ACU's, so many pockets...) all the time. I also grab my M3 some of the time but am hesitant to leave it in my truck or in my office, cant't trust everyone. I did just get a Mamiya Super 23 but don't think it will fit in my pocket :p

For years it was my FE2 with the 50 1.4, I love it, but that was a little big for pockets... Then it became the R4M with the 40 1.4 AND the XA, so I can go from sun to shade in B&W, or from B&W to color any day, any time...

Cheers,

Juan

If what you ask is how I do it:

As I prefer to use the XA prefocused, with a small f-stop (8 or 11), I use it for direct sun, with Tri-X or TMax400, and I expose it at 200 with a short development to control high contrast. I keep the same film in the R4M for shots in the shadows on the same sunny day, but exposed at 400 or 800 if needed (the 40 1.4 is in good place for that), and I have some color film on my pocket too, just in case: ektar or portra if negative, and kodachrome if slide film: all of them have nice color and can work well with skin too. I have my incident meter with me always, although for fast ocassional shots I meter with camera only.

Cheers,

Juan

When I have a film camera with Me, I keep the Olympus SP-565UZ in a pocket ,just in case or I have the EOS20D I keep the Fed-2 in a pocket never with out camera, If all else fails I got my Cell fone camera:

My pocket camera is a Zeiss Contaflex I. And yes, I carry a 35mm SLR in my pocket sometimes. Mostly when I go to unsafe places or when I'm not allowed to take pictures.

It is a pain to carry a 350D in a high school, So I usually got my Ricoh 519 with 5 year old Fuji (Its for fun).

Sometimes i will have the fed though loaded with TrX

Been lugging my GA645 around a lot lately. Not exactly a pocket cam, but smaller to carry than a 5D/50F1.8 when the lens is retracted. In practice, it's a lot quieter than I thought it was; when I first heard the film advance, I thought it sounded like a corded drill.
