New York June Meet-up?

Im out of this one too.. It turns out 3 years ago on this weekend, I got married... Good thing I have a reminder on my phone..

Almost like the TV commercial. LOL.

Every year my girlfriend reminds me about her birthday.

BTW I live in sin. (Unmarried)

Sorry I missed the meet-up this month.
I had my own meet-up of sorts, while in Europe on business, I bounced over to Barcelona for a day and had Damaso as my tour guide. Happy to report that Damaso is doing well and should be around for the July meet-up.

For July I'm thinking of a different kinda Meet-Up, but it will have to be a Saturday.

Andre tells me that the "Burger Garage" was showcased on the Food Channel. The burgers are great and the cost are low. Range fed beef BTW. They are closed Sundays though. The Burger Garage is across Jackson Ave from the Citigrooup skyscrapper in Court Square.

At PS1, starting in July they have these massave parties called "Warm Ups" every Saturday where they invite world class DJ's to spin for a massive dance party. The music can be heard about a quarter mile away and all these hipsters from Madhattan converge into my neighborhood looking for PS1. At times these parties have 4-5 thousand people.

Right across the Jackson Ave from PS1 is 5 Pontz which is a major center for graph-feat-ee art. On Saturdays permits are given out where artists can legally paint a series of buildings that comprise an entire city block to showcase there work for two weeks before it gets painted over again.

The June Meet-Up was small. (I made it at the end and went shooting with John and Jeff.) Ikinda wanted to make the most of a spectacular day, and I wanted to shoot rather than talk about photography.

So I'm thinking about meeting up at the Burger Garage, go shooting at 5 Pontz, and then go to the Warm-Up at PS1 which is basically outdoors. (MOMA members get in free and LIC residents).

What do you think?

That sounds really cool, actually. As long as we can stop for beer occasionally. :p

There's a dive bar right across from PS1. Also DN you can drive to LIC. Plenty of free parking.

Basically I'm trying to set up a few ops to shoot. BTW these warm ups are massive and go on all afternoon.

Warmup is fun but can be a little bit much. If there is enough room at the Burger Garage sure we could meet there then if people want to go on they can. We can also pick a midtown meet up spot near the LIC bound trains as well.

I'm down cal... may not have to be the official July meet-up as well... if people want to do the regular beer and bull**** meet up.

There kinda is space to have a meet-up for lunch, but since its a resturant its probably not cool to hang out there all afternoon. Just across Jackson Ave is an updated public space where there are mucho tables and chairs right across from the Citigroup skyscrapper. Its kinda underutilized and we could take over the area. If you wanted you could do your own picnic.

Warm-up is kinda crazy because of the huge mob, but shooting the hipsters even just outside PS1 is good for street shooting.

Saturdays at 5 Pontz is always interesting. Always full of colorful characters and interesting background.

I think a meet-up like this is kinda spread out, but also contained within a few blocks.

Yesterday I had to get some shooting in because the weather was great. I think Puck Fair is a great place for meet-ups, but you know me: I like all kinds of different things.

As you know my part of LIC is mostly vacant on the weekends, but all these hipsters kinda invade Court Square on Saturdays beginning in July. The neighborhood kind gets taken over.

Sorry I missed you guys: my beloved MTA kneecapped me going into Manhattan, where I had to run to Adorama to pick up some Portra film for a last-minute paid gig (yay!), but had no way of getting to PF in time for the meet-up (grrrr...). Didn't even have time for the Pride parade; was lucky to make it to the gig in reasonable time, and that at least went well.

(My flight from Seattle touched down later that morning than expected as well, which didn't help.)

Dunno about the PS1 thing, though: I like different venues, but that sounds a bit more raucous than I can rise to. Over in my neck o' Bucktown, however, there's several great pubs where we can hang (Sidecar and Black Horse immediately come to mind), not feel rushed or crowded cheek-to-jowl, and great eats and drinks at less-than-silly-Manhattan prices. Just a thought. But wherever we end up, I'll be there this time.

Well I suggest we have a multi stage meet up:
I like the idea of using the outdoor space perhaps we should make it the first annual RFF summer picnic? We can set a backup space in case of inclement weather? Before, during or after people can wander around and shoot...

Sounds like a great idea Damaso. I'm just hoping it isn't going to be the weekend of the 30th or 31st. 20 year high school reunion that weekend for me (damn!).

The PS1 thing is way crazy, but that's why I think its a great idea. I think like the Mermaid Parade its best to go way early before it gets mobbed, and when mobbed call it quits. The concentration of hipsters kinda reaches critical mass and that's why I think its interesting. All I know is that just outside PS1 the crowds/mobs get big, especially later in the afternoon. I'm thinking go in early and get out before it gets really mobbed.

Also I know that some guys like John like doing crazy things to get odd shots.

I just find things like this challenging... to be able to get something that goes beyond the cliche. Like the parade... hard to get something that goes beyond the cliche. But then again, sometimes the cliche works.

I like this idea. And I missed the last meetup. So count me in.

Right in plain sight of the Citigroup skyscrapper is this public space where they have a dozen tables set up with fixed 4 chairs per table where we could easily handle 50 people. The E train stop is just across the street.

The Burger Garage just down the block was just written up in "Time Out New York" and was ranked among the top 5 best burger joints in New York along with the Shake Shack in Madison Square Park. Andre told me he saw the Burger Garage featured on the food channel, but unfortunately they are closed on Sundays.

Court Square is just one stop from Madhattan. The reason why I'm hyping the Burger Garage is that it makes for not needing a grill. BTW very inexpensive when compared to Madhatten prices.
