Seriously considering a J-8 but on what body to use? Never owned any Russian/Soviet equipment.

IME, it's an excellent lens on any camera that can take an m39 mount (either natively, or using an adapter).

If you shoot film, but don't want to spend a fortune on Leica equipment, how about trying it on a Bessa R?

OTOH, if you shoot digital, the J-8 plays very nicely with the Sony A7 series.
