Just a question, about two wonderful cameras, none of which I can afford...
one is heavy, with the body made in brass,
the other is lighter, and it's body is made in magnesium alloy
one has a big rangefinder base, the other a little bigger
one has a big viewfinder, but the other has a huge one
one has a smooth cloth shutter, the other a metal one, not so smooth, but quiet enough
one has only manual mode, the other manual and Av mode
one camera, used, costs as much as the other, new
Yes, one is a Leica M6, the other is a Zeiss Ikon, I never touched one of them, but if I read the specifications, I must think the Zeiss should be better ...
But Leica is a myth... Ok, also Zeiss, isn't it?
They can use the same lenses, and make the same shots (also my little cheap Bessa R...), but...
But if I buy a Leica, when (and if... ) I'll sell it, I probably will lost much less money
Why? Because HCB used a Leica? If he was living now, what camera would he use? Perhaps a Zeiss? Or a digital Canon? Perhaps a digital point&shoot ?
Your opinion, please!
Franco
ps: just joking...

Franco I use Leica cameras that were bought before the ZI cameras were manufactured, and I've got used to them and don't want to change now. If I was buying afresh I'd certainly try the ZI - why not? There are lots of good reports both here and elsewhere on that camera. Leica does seem to retain value better than other brands perhaps because of the collector aspect; but for me this is a hobby and you don't look to a hobby to make money; most cost money.

If you can't afford a Leica, or a Zeiss-Ikon, nothing's lost.
Despite the aura that surrounds their names, they're just cameras with their strong and weak points.. Same like the Voigtlanders, also with their strong and weak points, they're just different points.
You still have your Bessa-R, don't you? No aggravating bottom loading, never a shutter with a hole burned in, affordable to replace when lost or stolen..

Well-known
I went for a Bessa, what steered me away from ZI was the bottom rewind crank.

I'm happy with my Bessa R, and I enjoy it a lot, but what's wrong in the bottom rewind crank? If it allow a longer rangefinder base... Why not?

Only you can decide what's best for you. Pick them both up and see which feels better to you. That's all that matters. Only you need to be happy with your choice.
