I said "we", referring to myself, the OP and many of us.
The shallow term referred to the "M9 spotting", not the OP who I know is a good person.

Well we didn't get supplies for a good week. People were talked into not donating because for some reason we 'deserved' what happened. And about donating, I'd recommend going with the Salvation Army as opposed to the Red Cross. Red Cross was terrible in my experience and they tend to keep their funds instead of spending, they also have an incredibly high overhead, and incredibly high paid executives.

After Katrina I actually had Red Cross people refuse to give me aid because I didn't fit some kind of preconceived profile (I'm white) of a New Orleanian.

I feel for you, I guess we white people deserve it. I will never give a cent to Red Cross. My uncle was in the hurricane in the Florida Keys a couple of years ago and was desperate for help. The Red Cross told him that he cannot have aid because he was a White Single Male. F'M. you won't see one cent of my money going to Haiti.

Mostly in line with the above...I'd also recommend the International Rescue Committee, the ICRC, and UNHCR. In the early chaotic stages I assume that the military will use its muscle to ship and airlift huge amounts of emergency stuff; bury the dead and clear the rubble, and that at a later stage the 'traditional' humanitarian agencies will play a role in administering displaced camps; reconstruction and return of the civilian population to the Capital. This said, interest, compassion and support is what your government needs right now.

More than one issue here, but no need to jump on the OP.

Medecins Sans Frontiers, and the English translation group, Doctors without Borders, have been doing very good work for a long time. I have seen references to their good work for many years, beginning 25 years ago when I first visited France. I get the impression they are as good as any other group. I did not notice any big political agenda.

Perhaps it is good to be reminded of people in need, and give what you can now, and continue, perhaps a small amount automatically deducted on a regular basis-- Haiti needed it before and will need it long after the immediate event is no longer on the news.

Majority of their population is very young, and uneducated, problems that will remain unless a continual effort is put forth in those areas as well as immediate survival and building, hopefully with higher standards on solid areas.

I clicked on the thread because I am interested in Photo Journalism, as well as other issues.

Perhaps someone can find a suitable recipient for funds, and place an ad in the classifieds.

Hoping Ann Curry's photos make a difference, and help and money get to the right places.

And, to people concerned about charging batteries, I seem to recall Leica ships a charger with the camera that works off of cars as well. It's OK to have other thoughts, does not mean you don't care about the more important stuff.

I only know of her because she's a reporter here (whom I have never seen, because she works for the mostly Socialist NBC) who shoots Leica.

My wife and I donate to Medecins sans Frontieres every year and have done so again after the quake. They are a good organization and because Haiti was in dire straits even BEFORE the earthquake, they are already there on the ground. http://www.msf.org/

Catholic Relief Services is also there. http://crs.org/

I'll vouch for MSF, and I donate to them too. I researched it in detail a few years ago and it seems with them almost all of what you donate goes directly to the people who need it.

+1 for MSF, IRC too. There's a link on NPR.org that will take you to some of the well-established charities and relief groups working in Haiti right now, as well as a link to CharityNavigator if you want to check on a particular group. Very quick and easy online, and gets money fast to where it's needed.

If you've checked out the online portfolios, you can see Ann is an accomplished photographer who has visited some of the world hot spots and produced some excellent images while on her TV assignment.

Rather than just lamenting the tragedy in Haiti, perhaps there's a photography-connected way to do something about it. For example, how many would be willing to pay, say, $50 for a printed portfolio of Ann's images with profits going to Haiti charities? If there is enough interest here, perhaps we could talk her into publishing it.

How about setting up a contest of sorts, with proof of a charitable donation required for entry? The Leica forum did this recently for Cancer research with good results.

Any other ideas? Just brainstorming at this point. But the Haiti tragedy will take years of recovery, and early donations are likely to dry up in the short term.

Only 50-100 thousand feared dead. Could they spare it? How many days did they devote to the sad story of that blue-eyed blonde girl that went missing in Aruba?

Gave it a shot, but have gotten 10 replies saying they are busy, hope Mexico does not charge me for each of these downloads, will be far more than any donation. Still, small potatoes compared with the folks down there.

I checked her work as well, she knows her way around a camera, I would say she should sell prints to raise money, IMO.

There is a real place for still photography in all of this.
