For everyone who owns one or both if you were me and fixen to buy one which would you buy and why? I have an idea of which one i want but wonder if others observation and experience will help me think of things I haven't already.

xe-1. smaller body, better EVF (and therefore better usage with legacy lenses). if i were shooting only with fuji glass, i might go xpro.

For me it's the xpro1. It has a more familiar feel in hand with it's almost M proportions.
Also, the optical VF is very much a useful and usable feature. I will admit I use the EVF about 3/4 of the time but, still would not give up the OVF (same, same when using the x100).

I have the XPro and am extremely satisfied with it. I'm not fond of the EVF, so the loss of the OVF is a deal breaker for me. I'm reluctantly getting used to the EVF, but the OVF is a joy for me. I'm thinking of adding an X100s for a second body to complete my kit.

I agree. I guess it comes down to do you want a smaller camera with a better EVF or a larger camera with an OVF/EVF combo. The good news is that you can't lose either way you choose.

Please explain legacy lenses. I would want to use my jupiter 8 and a nokton that i own as well as at least one fuji lens.

I went with the XE because I'm used to EVF with Ricoh GXR and M43, and I plan to mount M/LTM on the Fuji a I do with the older APS/M43 bodies. Plus I'm used to the smaller digital bodies. Plus I shoot a good deal with my GRD, composing on-screen, so a VF is simply a preferable option. When I want RF focusing, I shoot film.
For someone coming directly from manual RF-land, wanting focus-level continuity AND happy to rely on the Fujinon lenses in manual mode, the XP is probably the better choice.
I had posed the same XP/XE question to a fellow RFFer who had the XP but had handled both; he unhesitatingly recommended the XE. Good luck!

legacy = not-fuji. i suppose legacy could include modern non-fuji lenses, but for now, let's just include all those old rangefinder lenses kicking around your closet. just add adapters!

X-pro for me too. I love the fuji glass and use it 90% of the time. Playing around with legacy when I have the time, then I use the EVF. The rest of the time, I love the OVF.

Same xp1 for me. I use ovf more than 70% of the time w/ Fuji native lenses and maybe over 40% using legacy lenses such as my ultron 28f1.9 or Konica rf 21/35 when I am shooting in zone or hyper focal mode. There is a trick where u can start in ovf mode, hit the mag to focus and go back immediately to ovf for finally framing which is decently fast. The bigger body of the xp1 balances the heavy rf glass such as a trielmar or my Konica 21/35 very well or even the bigger slr lenses.. U don't get that lens heavy feel..

i don't think i could pick...i like them both...i have a hard enough time of choosing one for the day...i often take both.
i can say that with the fuji grip the x-e1 is a fantastic fit in the hand....using only evf i love the x-e1...i am using the ovf less and less...i hit the q button much less on the x-e1...

Sounds great, how about manual focus on the x-e1, is the evf usable? regularly shots out of focus?

i only use the fuji lenses and never manual focus...i bought a new camera system with the idea of using af only and only native lenses.

I would miss the OVF. I do like the more compact size of the XE. The reason I have not sold my X100 and replaced it with a XE is the OVF.

Think Im going with the pro. I like an ovf plus it looks good. close enough in price I might always regret not getting a pro if I dont buy it. Thanks for all your opinions.

I purchased the x-e1 and just exchanged it and upgraded to the x-pro 1 with the rebate promotion that is going on right now ... all in it cost me 100 for the upgrade!
I will say after owning and using both now for a little over a week that I really prefer :
-xp1 for it's build quality over the xe1
-xp1 for it's awesome ovf hybrid
-xe1 for it's oled vf - I wish you could have both (ovf hybrid with upgraded oled finder - I'd want a quicker refresh rate tho)
-xe1 for the built in flash - easily remedied with an external and I don't use flash too much so not a deal breaker
I much much much prefer the xp1 overall from the xe1. It feels so much nicer in your hands, the OVF is just so slickly done and the rear lcd is a substantial improvement over the xe1 if you use it for live view, manual focusing legacy lenses, etc.
Glad I upgraded - I won't be looking back!

I have owned both. I like both. I currently have the X-E1 and occasionally wish for the OVF. But I have a Zeiss clip-on OVF that works nearly as well, and I ride a bike most places. I am almost always happy about the smaller size of the X-E1. I have shot my best work in about 10 years with the X-E1. I'm oddly sad that that's the case; I'd really rather that were true of the M6 and film. But the results speak. The X-E1 is just a terrifically competent camera.

I sold my X-P1 once I got the X-E1. I don't zone focus, so with the OVF I found the lack of any kind of focus confirmation, combined with unreliable autofocus too annoying. I'm enjoying the smaller and lighter X-E1.
