Leica 50mm Dual Range Summicron

Like Wayne, I'll add some that served a "technical" purpose for me. :)

Why do modern lenses have such dramatic contrast when compared with older lenses?

Because thanks to the miracle of computer power, all of the 'flaws' in the old lenses have been eliminated. Modern lenses allow us to record images of the people we love with an accuracy that borders on the savage.

 ;) :D

In a word: coatings (the modern versions of which are tough, vacuum-deposited and cut down on contrast-robbing internal reflections in a lens).

Although I've sold it

Although I've sold it

Here is one I like;

I have a terrific rigid Summicron that I sent to DAG for a CLA. I wanted to send the front element to Arax for recoating but DAG persuaded me not to, saying that the condition of the front element was one of the best he'd ever seen and that it didn't need to be polished/coated. Now I have it back I'm not convinced because the lens doesn't have the contrast I'm used to. I don't want to sell it and I don't want to use a yellow filter and faster film.

Reala and resolution

Reala and resolution

These show off the fine grain of Fuji Relala and the resolution of the DR Summicron. Points for technical merit only. No style points to be awarded.

Damn you, Wayne. The only thing that could be harder to stomach (i.e., I had a DR) would be some shots on K25.

One more for good measure

One more for good measure

So you don't want to see anymore of these, hey? Same roll as the previous example. About 5 minutes and 20' apart. I think Relala could make me forget Kodachrome 25. Or at least not worry about Kodachrome 25's demise.

Homage to weathered wood and rust. Sorry. No dirty glass, pealing paint or torn screen.

My Summicron DR should arrive tomorrow!

My Summicron DR should arrive tomorrow!

I just happened upon this thread and now I am very excited indeed!

I have just had my M3 and 50mm Elmarit CLA'd by Malcolm Taylor in Hereford, and while chatting on the phone about all things Leica he mentioned he had a very nice 1961 Summicron DR for sale, recently stripped down and fully serviced. It should arrive with my M3 tomorrow :D

After seeing the wonderful pictures in this thread I think this is exactly what I am looking for to capture the softer, early Leica look to contrast with the extremely sharp images from the modern lenses.

Thanks to all for sharing these pictures, and have a merry christmas!

All the best,

Dan

I want mine to, it's at DAG for CLA since a few weeks but I haven't heard anything from him yet. Does anyone know how busy he is?

Is there an "ignore DR" or at least "ignore thread" function on this stupid site? :bang:

Dan, welcome indeed. Aside from all the gear here, we all eventually wear uniforms, which are jackets whose sleeves cross behind us.

I had an 8-10 week wait for my rigid Summicron from him recently. If it is any help the lens came back transformed. :) Don generally does not send an email until he is ready to charge and ship back to you. It will be worth the wait though.

Earl, this is for you

Earl, this is for you

Homage to weathered wood II and Raku Potter. These do not do justice to the lens or film.

joe: Wayne is trying to drive me off RFF. I can't stand it. The only weapon I have: OM-1n, Zuiko 21/2.
