Seems the local law enforcement in NYC were just a little busy to prevent every robbery going on. Call it what it was, thief. Some people think it justifiable until robbed, or Police should be banned until they need protection.

Well to be fare to NYPD they were SEVERLY undermanned the last few nights. So many people were outside they had no way of protecting the entire city. I completly blame the mayor on this. His handling of the coronavirus here has been borderline criminal and on top of it he keeps refusing help from the governor. They got caught flat footed

They say stores are robbed well after protest are finished. And not by protesters.
I was listening one non-American, non left person who likes to tell facts, not agenda.
He told how decades ago Korean shop owners didn't have insurance and police ignored them. Racizm doesn't differentiate colors. They stud on the roofs of Korean quarters with rifles. No looting in Korean shops.
Google "roof Koreans".
I doubt police will do anything about Leica stolen gear reported as it will resurface. I can't recal any previous occurance. I remember how rare stolen photo gear was on the open sale and owner has no help from authorities.

As a business owner myself..
Part of the blame goes to the owner of that shop..to not self preserve and defend..
At the start of all this..a month or 2 ago..he should have removed all stock from that store..and put in safe location..or even 2 separate locations..just in case..
Removed all Leica signage and put a big sign up on door and in window....No merchandise inside..
But instead..what do you see..
A big Leica flag hanging and waving outside..and reams of expensive camera equipment inside..
Might as well have said..Rolex watches and gold jewelry and diamonds inside..
Come and rob me..

That isn’t fair. That’s the trendiest spot in NY and no one expected the NYPD would be ordered to stand down. The blame falls entirely on the mayor’s head (and the very small brain contained within). The governor offered National Guard units and the Mayor refused.
As for the peaceful protestors, it is correct that those concerned souls have a right to do so. Guaranteed by the US Constitution. But as the crowd of 10 or 20 thousand passes, the vultures sweep in because the cops are gone. It should occur to the well intentioned after 3 or 4 days to make that connection and just stop. But they are too self-involved to notice or to care.

Bingo! I was trying to understand how protests and crime are related. But it was already shown in Die Hard 3.
I still think here is no relation between protesters and store robbers. First are politically motivated, second are scavengers.

Wonder how long it will be before new digital cameras will be connected to the internet and stolen gear can be turned off and 'bricked' remotely, besides indicating it's location.
Of course I could see where that could all go wrong in the hands of hackers out to cause mayhem.
I well remember the 1970's when the only protection you had was a list of serial numbers. I worked at Altman's in Chicago and each week we turned in a list of serial numbers of equipment taken in trade to the Chicago Police dept.

In some cities, merchants boarded up their shops back in March when the quarantine first started. I've seen some in Chicago; admittedly in the sketchier neighborhoods. Dallas too but I am sure there are more. But who knows; maybe the Leica store was getting ready to re-open and they had brought all the stuff back in anticipation. No one knows.

As if you couldn`t possibly afford a Leica? I used to deal with this when I bought my first Leica...I was 20. The stores wouldn`t even let me hold the camera in my hands. B&H (when it was on 17th St) actually was nice to me... probably why they still exist and have grown.

I had that at a Ford dealership in the LA area. I wanted to test drive a Focus SVT (I think it was that - it was whatever their hottest hatch was at the time) and the salesman refused. He then saw me drive off in my BMW M Coupe (the one based on the Z3) and his jaw dropped.
Similar experience at a Nissan dealership.
But the Leica Store in LA have always been super nice. So it just depends on who they employ.

I never understood this type of thinking... you can never tell who has money or who doesn`t. And at the time, I was able to get an M6, 35mm summicron and a 50mm summicron for $2000 total. That`s not exactly impossible to do if you work even if you are young.

A little OT but maybe useful to relax a little...
I still remeber first time I went into a well known photo shop (also a Leica dealer) of the town where I was living in that time and said I was planning to buy a Leica and was looking for some infos about the first question the owner ask me was : " do you know how much does it cost?"

Its a businesses job to figure out if you are a tire kicker or not..esp on expensive items..so they dont waste time on you..
But that said..too many dumb assumptions regarding customers..make for bad business..
And sometimes the guy you would never think would drop a ton of money..
Makes your day..and month...and maybe even..your ..year..
Indie camera shops can be bad..esp high end ones..sometimes very snooty..some of them..
Depends on employee..
But once stung..you never forget..
