Leica Store SoHo in NYC Looted

Yes I was shocked when I heard about this on the news. I have dealt with Eli and Craig quite often on the phone, in fact I did a transaction with them late on the afternoon of the day they were about to close for the Covid virus. Now this.
 
I hear you Helen. But even with gates; the historic Central Camera here in Chicago had gates, they were up, and locked. Unfortunately, give a group enough time and heavy enough objects, and even with the alarms going off, looters were able to break thru the gates, smash up the store, steal the merchandise, and set the building on fire.

Very sad indeed.

I was very sad to see Central Camera on the news the other day. My grandfather worked as a photographer in the area there, and Im sure spent a lot of time in that shop. I go there for film and odds and ends, love the shop.
 
Basically..police didnt protect small business..
Too busy beating up people...
Was this on purpose..?

I wouldnt be surprised if they profit from it in some manner..fencing, kickbacks, etc..
As there is a LOT..of $$ to be made here..


Years ago..in my small town..an old man in construction told me..
That the cops in the 40's thru the 60's..
Were integral in much of the crime in the town..
If a door to a business was left unlocked... or broken into..and the cops found out..they looted it before reporting it...hours later..

And on construction sites..where there are many valuable resources..same looting as well..
He mentioned all the copper pipes were stolen from a site he was working on in town overnite..
Mafia and cops in league..

He said this was common..

This surprised me when I heard it..


Even now..those vids of cops taking a knee w/protestors..
Its coming out as ingenuous..that the same exact cops...soundly beat up the protesters they just hugged ..a mere 45 min later..after the photo op was over..

Nope..
I just look at the facts..


1. Lots of dough to be made all around right now...
2. Lots of folks to do it..
3. Plenty of opportunities for "profit"..
4. Insurance will cover it...
5. Just before the big collapse of society..make as much..as you can..as you may not have it tomorrow..

Not a brainiac move or such....or conspiracy..
..just greed..human nature..very predictable..as it always happens in war times..and upheavals..

And ..thats.. what actually.. happened..
Small businesses..got robbed blind..with cops all over the place..except where the crime was actually happening..lol..
I just look at the facts..what actually happened..

Remember Serpico..the 1 honest cop in NYC in the 60's....
He got shot in the face for his honesty..suffered and moved overseas..
Nothing could be done about it..


Cops..whatcha gonna do..when they come for you...
Small businesses... watch out..
I'm sure some small business is getting robbed right now..while I'm writing this..
With cops around the corner..beatin up on some protestor..
 
You can also theorize looting as a form of non violent protest in the US, a statement addressing the gulf between the haves/have nots, a social statement like reality performance art. Don’t cops follow orders from their superiors and their superiors take orders from elected officials? I am sure all the Leicas looted are donated to Goodwill.
 
Like I said on another forum, looters don't care about making social statements, other than having swag and clout, and what they can fence later on. They're looting everything from pharmacies and convenience stores to brand names like Gucci, Hermes, and Leica. They're setting fire to restaurants and putting thousands into financial hardship. Many smaller stores can't afford to go on, and they're not selling multi thousand dollar handbags, they're selling basic food and supplies.


I was horrified when the news segment about Leica SoHo came up. The looters have no shame.

As a small retail business owner for the past 26 years..and have had friendly relations with the cops in my town..and pretty good experiences over the years w/them..
I'm very aware of this kind of thing..
And purposely ended my storefront business with the advent of Covid-19..as I knew the sheit..was gonna hit the fan..big time..
And it sure did in the cities..worse I've ever seen it..
And I lived thru the 1960's..


Cops..

There are good ones..
And there are bad ones..
Which are the ones..you gotta watch out for..
As they are just taking a paycheck..
And dont care about anyone..
 
I saw an interview done with a neighbour and video of the event. I think they knew exactly what they were doing. It didn't look like the other videos of kids looting convenience stores or Macys etc. This looked much more organized and rapid. Seriously doubt the gear would get tracked down. I've had a few sneering faces look down on me when I've been in that store. Hope they recover and claim the insurance. Don't really care if they don't reopen
 
To Emille's point, back in the 50's & 60's in Brooklyn, the local cops were often part of the looting squads. My dad had a grocery, and it would get broken in and looted every now and again. After the criminals got done, Cops would show up and carry off the hams and salamis when the reports were done.

The new breed of NYPD are very different but at the direction of His Excellency the Mayor, they stood by as organized crime gangs and anarchist/social justice "warrior" types had pallets of bricks pre-placed around New York and ready for the chaos. Eli Kurland had the very best stuff on display. He had 2 (count 'em, two) 35-70/2,8 R zooms on display this past summer. All sorts of rare stuff. Hollywood-types as well as some of the best known photographers of our time were regulars. They'd show some of their best works at Eli's get-togethers. Craig, his right-hand man, is the best. No bit of kit, new or old, major or minor is beyond his immediate recall.

Disguting, inexcusable and repulsive.

A whole neighborhood laid waste, thousands of jobs now lost and the Authorities, if Alcalde "Bill" dumBlazio can be reckoned as one, could give a damn. Hs own daughter was arrested during the 2nd night of rioting. She was released immediately after being booked (they outlawed bail in NY!) and returned home to the official Mayor's residence at Gracie Mansion, escorted and protected by the very same well-armed police she was tossing detritus at hours before.

A friend of mine in NC posted some video of cops destroying a medical clinics supplies. Apparently preemptively, to stop them from treating protestors tear-gassed by the police. Disturbing stuff especially since they assaulted the staff

It's really a perfect storm..both political and environmental..

If we are not very very careful..we are going to have a civil war in this country..the likes we have not known..
It wont be like the last one..North..vs...South..
It will be..everyone..against..everyone..


And the last thing we all will be concerned with is..
Leica cameras..and their swanky boutiques..
