Leica to announce a new M-mount M6 film camera in Oct 2022

“An MP in an M6 body” the article above states.

How thin can this pie be sliced? To me, an MP is a re-issued M6 with an M3 rewind knob. An M-A is a re-issued M3 with no self timer and an M6 viewfinder. So what is an MP in an M6 body? It’s an M6.

Just make a Hello Kitty version and be done with it!

A shell game

If this camera is limited to just 500 I'll be sorely disappointed. The M system camera is more relevant now than in the last couple of decades, and there is pent up demand for a reasonable M mount rangefinder. Hopefully Cosina see the market gap and bring us something. I just want a simple, well made M mount camera with a light meter for a reasonable price (sub 2.5-3k usd).

If nothing else Leica is pumping up the market for other M-mount rangefinder camera manufacturers. It seems obvious that Leica cameras do not keep the lights on at Leitz. They may even make more on cellphone technology that they do on the Barnack line. This may be a leading indicator. The new Leica market may start to dry up and then diminish to bling.

I bought a Voigtlander R2 for $500 on Rff at the beginning of the pandemic. It is probably still around $1000-1200. Ticks all your boxes.

This one is more interesting:

I hope people who are going to shell out for that product realize the focus-shiftiness of those lenses. Liveview to the rescue!

Seriously, how expensive can it possibly be to reproduce an old, already existing lens design? Nikon was able to recreate from the ground up its 1960s 50mm f/1.4 Olympic Nikkor in 2000 for not a zillion dollars. Konica recreated the 35mm f/1.8 Nikkor at a reasonable price (Hexar AF / UC Hex). VC makes sub-$1000 world class fast lenses.

Well, you gave the answers, but Leica is not interested in selling cheap lenses. It does not matter how much it costs them to make.

Film photographers are a niche group among photographers. Rangefinder film photographers are a niche within a niche. Is that market large enough for a company like Cosina to re-introduce the R3M and R3A? Today - maybe.

Leica believes their products are Veblen goods, so they are happy with low production and high prices.

Haha if its price tag is not ridiculous, it won't fly off the shelves 😉

True, I was only talking personally... that I find it ridiculously priced. I never pay more than $1000 for any lens. I should have been more clear. Of course, Leica sells $5000 lenses every single day.

A free roll of film entices people these days? And how many of the 500 new M6 cameras could they possibly offer in each shop? Sounds like a good way to disappoint customers. The offer is for the first 100 people who show up. To see a super limited edition camera? What am I missing? Well I guess it is a chance to meet others that are into film photography and Leica.

“Each roll of film will be developed and scanned in partnership with The Darkroom lab. Participants will be able to pick up their processed film and discuss imagery with other creators as well as Leica brand ambassadors later in November. This offer is limited to the first 100 participants at each of our participating Leica Stores.”

I really dont understand leica in theese things. Is she producing cameras and lenses for photographers or for collectors. I buy cameras to photograph with them, not to look them in a shelf and admire how they look. If i was going to ever buy a leica it would be one that is modern (m6 and after) and reasonably priced so i could use it all the time without babying it. They formula used for her cameras is the same for many many years so apparently they want to keep prices so high including used ones. 15 years ago they costed less than now and they take the same photographs as then. I wonder sometimes for example about the m11. As a consumer if i buy something i want that to be in its time. I wouldnt buy the m9 now if i had to buy one it would be the real stuff, the m11. But with those prices one cant save and buy cause with 8300euro you can buy a car. I may see the whole idea wrong but for me photography is fun and with so expensive stuff its not so much of it. If i ever win the jackpot ill buy one with a small 50mm to use all the time and throw away not caring about it much, like i do with every camera i have till it doesnt work anymore or till i get bored of it. Till then ill just look at the models and wonder who really uses them. And by uses i mean daily on the streets on journeys etc.
