Leica to announce a new M-mount M6 film camera in Oct 2022

I'd say that film is more needed than cameras. There are so many film cameras available and so little film.

Consumerism is the major factor.

Back in true lomography days it was cheap, expired film on cheap soviet, refurbed LOMOs. Once Lomography became business they made shops with new plastic film cameras.

These days here is barely any expired film, new pack of rolls costs same as new camera used to cost. Consumerism (main motto for film these days) wants new film in new film cameras.
And where is next to none. Only used and getting far and farer from pristine condition film cameras.

So, even if more film will be made, it is will be not affecting demand on new cameras driven by consumerism.

Could be luuca, I was thinking that could be where they are going. However, all of it points to the M-A / MP at this point. Even though Joe Greer is using an M6 it still brings people to the two cameras they already have. I'm starting to think maybe we won't see anything new.

Leica sent out a #filmisnotdead email today. Thought it would the new camera... it was not.

I wonder why those video tips are "supported" by cooph.com, a retailer of camera accessories, including men's and women's clothing? Those yellow straw "photo hats" aren't really doing it for me. Maybe if Ralph Gibson were modeling it, it would have more panache. On the other hand, those crew socks with the camera on them look pretty stylish. Nothing says professional like crew socks with a camera on them.

If there is to be a new M camera, there aren’t too many features Leica hasn’t already introduced for a manual camera.

For example, aside from being newer, I see no advantage an M-A has over an M2 (or M3 if you don’t shoot wider than 50mm). Likewise with the MP and M6.

I agree, some form of M7-like autoexposure may be the way to go.

Haha, the luxury lifestyle market just is not a hit here. 😉 I did not even notice any of that stuff. I did look at the photos the Greer guy made and they did get me to look at the M-A page again. They are lovely cameras for sure, but I would never ever buy one.

I don’t know for sure but am only guessing that Leica has run out of electronic parts for the metered bodies and only has enough for repairs, but they had to use up the hardware in inventory so the MA was born. The new film body will be metered else it wouldn’t make any sense since there are used M2 etc out there.

Used M2s do not make Leica any money, that is why new cameras are made by Leica, to sell and make money.

On another forum, someone noticed that Leica USA had posted a photo of the old CM compact film camera on social media:

Perhaps a hint of a new digital compact to fill the void left by the discontinuation of the APS-C cameras? Pretty sure the odds of a modern, high-grade film compact are nil, but wouldn't that be something.

I don't know whether sales trends for Leica M cameras mirror those of the luxury automobile market, but it seems that the latter has done very nicely, with trends favoring higher-end product:

Just read a similar article in today's Wall Street Journal which among other things, cited narrowed price gap between "normal" cars and high-end, and better availabiity of higher-end cars encouraging buyers to move upmarket.

I'd like that, too. I've avoided the M7 over repairability concerns. I'd even welcome stuff like metering modes and AE lock and lock/hold.

I think that any general reliability issues with the M7 are overblown, other than the DX thing. The M7 does have AE lock, which is wonderful.

If there were really an ultimate wishlist for a Leica M, it would retain all of the M7's current features and have a rotating viewfinder mag ala the Canon VI. A great idea that Canon never ultimately perfected. Would be ridiculously expensive to attempt to reproduce today.
