Simply love the compactness of the 5cm f3.5 LTM elmar...my friend called it "pocket rocket"...so compact on a LTM Barnack you can easily put in the your pocket and it can be extended out like a rocket launcher...:D

That is true!

Right now I have have a Canon P with the large Canon 50 / 1.2 in a SLR camera back. The remaining one third of the space ist just enough to get a Zorki I with a Industar 22 (FSU Elmar copy) inside. It is a nice day & night set in a small camera bag.

I've had a bunch of Leica M 50, but kept one and only one 50: the glorious Summitar.

I succumbed and bought another Summitar (thanks Huub!), a glorious uncoated sample from 1939. This one is a keeper.

Still have the Elmar 50/3.5, though. That's a keeper, too.

Very nice Steve! Terrific lens. I'm popping mine up for sale tonight as I just don't use it much but you and others certainly show what can be done with this neat hunk of glass.

Great to see that you put the lens to good use Steve! Excellent images of this uncoated Summitar. I'm glad you like it.

Both lens are fine but image quality is slightly better with the Summitar.

I use both..

Guess the poll will be win by the summitar by far....but i voted on the elmar..it´s smaller and sharper at 3.5 as the summitar...
It´s the 2nd most pocketable lens ever.
The first place would go for the 3.5cm elmar....which is the most pocketable lens ever, also always ready to shoot!!!

You know, at the end of the day they're both wonderful lenses, if you get good samples and learn their limitations. I've seen fabulous photos from each lens, both here on RFF and over on flickr.

I love my Summitar, I lost a bid on an Elmar the day before I purchased it, but yeah, I think if I won that auction and got an Elmar instead, I'd be equally thrilled with that. The most glaring con of the Summitar is that is so prone to flare, and that the hood to remedy it makes the lens pretty useless in terms of pocketability. I can correct the flare easily with scanned negatives, but I find getting a decent print much more of a challenge.
