Unlike the M7 hot shoe, the MP hot shoe has a notch to indicate the shutter speed. The corresponding M7 notch is engraved on the top plate. So, the availability of black chrome M7 hot shoes does not improve the situation for us MP owners.

The M7 is mine. I had Leica install the black chrome hotshot and the ring above the shutter release lever. Everything else is black paint. I also had the black frame counter installed later, for $20! The top plate was a tiny bit loose so they fixed that and installed the black frame counter for the cost of the part.
 
After a bit of searching I found a few posts and write ups on the net re the film counter. I suspect it's not a standard part kept by Leica, as to my knowledge they don't use black dials on anything else. They probably just paint one from the production line when requested. I believe it to be aluminium and it's held on with a left threaded screw. I'll try and get one plus the pointer plate this week, take off the black numbers with paint stripper and then paint it.
It looks so much nicer on a black camera and is much easier to read, can't understand why they don't make them like this as standard. It's probably just a cost decision.

Some older M's did have the black counter, as far as I'm aware. Also, some contemporary limited edition models use them, such as the MP Classic. When I asked about it, I was told they would check their stock held over for repairs and see if they could spare one. I don't think they would have gone through the trouble to take an unpainted dial off the assembly line and then paint it individually--the cost of such a thing would have been significant.

So, I think there is a supply. I just don't know how much is available for new cameras.
 
yes fair point, I'll ring them on monday and see if they will sell me either the black or chrome ones. From my calls to Germany in the past I'm not hopefull of getting just the part as Leica seem unwilling to just sell parts, prefering to charge for installation,
 
The black frame counter dial was on the Millennium M6 that much I know. It is a part that might still be in stock. Contact David Elwell and see what he can do for you. He sent me a schematic with the part numbers needed to install the frame counter. I'll have to see if I can find that email. Ah, a picture:

Hi,

Perhaps someone in the US could ask Dan at Leica NJ, parts dept. Leica USA is usually willing to sell parts... unless it's from a commemorative edition.
