Ok, I have an embarrassing question: what does Leica "DBP" stand for?
Deutsche bundes patent

Thanks, I didn't know that! So that's the German version of "patent pending".

Wow I thought it meant, "Dumb but Patient"
"German federal patent" as I understand it

You will find on vintage Leica gear either DRP or later DBP.
Both mean that a patent has been officially filed and acknowledged at the then responsible government office (Patent Pending would only mean a patent has been filed but not yet acknowledged).
DRP stands for Deutsches Reichspatent (meaning German Empire Patent and was issued as such during the time of the German Reich of Nazi Germany)
DBP stands for Deutsches Bundespatent (meaning German Federal Patent and was issued in Western Germany after the founding of the German Republic after WW2)
Always a pleasure for the eye to see Joe's pair of black and silver Leicas.

Received this a few days ago. Pretty great to get a 30 something year old camera with an original box.

Heck, the box looks like it has more wear than the camera!

Beautiful camera but I am most interested in the lens........ Is that a version 1 35mm Summicron in black (or black paint)? A rare bird indeed

So I took bit of a gamble the other week and it seems to have paid off so far. I'm already loving this camera. Time to give it some proper use and get some proper brassing happening!

Looks like a 35 summilux pre asph in standard black (with a nice lens cap). The aperture tabs are quite distinctive, an the chrome mount is visible too.

Yes you're right! It's the standard 35mm pre asph summilux. The lens cap came with the lens

Beautiful camera there splitimageview - technically easily a dream Leica M.
When looking at the unpainted script though this comes to mind:
Have the script filled with a highly gloss black lacqer, which has a beautiful contrast in certain light yet stays nice blacked out and stealthy.
It has the benefit of not looking "unfinished" of an otherwise exquisite looking camera ;-)
I like this idea. It reminds me of the Shelby GT500 I wanted to order; Gloss black with flat black racing stripes, but this way in reverse.
