I like everything except that top LCD.
Most people from the Eastern part of the world love LCDs (I mean this without offense intended at all). Maybe Leica will make a Chinese Economic Explosion Special Edition with LCD screens all over it.

Leica has always been about 'less' allowing the photographer to concentrate more on the photography than the camera. If I want an LCD to make my photography better, I pick up a Nikon or Macbook Pro.
An experience M shooter will feel their way through the f-top, shutter and focusing range without taking their eye off the subject. This was always the M way. Would be a real shame to lose it. M8.2>M9 removed the top LCD for good reason.

Exactly my point and I currently find myself in a state of confusion as to exactly why I was chosen to be quoted...

Very interesting prototype JuJu. You're trying to resolve some of the issues that lead M9 users to go through the rear LCD screen anytime there's a need to change the ISO, know how many pictures are left etc...
I hope the designers'll come accross your vision.

It's just a quote, elaborating on your point

Actually, the whole point of this design is to get rid of the rear LCD completely. I would kill the top LED display as well if I can figure out how to dial in the essentials with out it. Weird huh? an easterner who hates LCD...
Anyway, I will start a new thread when I come up with better solutions, thanks.

Having an LCD like that on top is actually a pretty good idea. I wouldn't be surprised if Leica incorporated something like that.
But not having the LCD on the back is a bad idea. One of the major benefits of having a digital camera is being able to look at the pictures that you have taken. Immediate gratification - that's what people want these days.

Well, firstly, being a purist I think exposure compensation is the biggest gimmick ever designed so get rid of that dial, or make it a white balance dial possibly. Put the old style ISO wheel back on the back, and add playback into the viewfinder which could be a hybrid like the X100. No need to display shutter and aperture on the LCD cause its right there in front of you. Also add a film advance lever and bring back the old size of the M. Now I'm happy

Second that, second that and second that (the whole post in detail I mean) ;-)

That's quiet a novel idea... get rid of the LCD, have ISO assigned via the dial and have a hybrid EVF/OVF used for playback and some other simple functions (what would you need? format card, select RAW/JPG... visual confirmation of other settings adjusted via dials maybe? - and an option to turn the EVF and all that stuff off...)
I imagine the size would be similar to a TTL once the LCD is removed (larger top plate to house the EVF/OVF electronice etc).

Not only that, it's like pissing into the wind as far as getting your idea's heard goes. There will never be a serious digital camera without an LCD. It's central to digital imaging, and a camera without it would be a disaster. That being said, I enjoyed that rendering anyway.
More film M pics pls!

An understandable objection, only rudely communicated.

By the way I love the M5 handling, I really cant understand why the camera is so neglected.
Hot m5. I've come around to quite like the m5. It's ugly yes, but in a really attractive way.

Great idea for a gear shot Craig! … too bad about the pesky reflections though.
