I'm saving up for a beater or user M6 hopefully with .85 finder and a cron 50, maybe a 35. I want this camera to use not display. How much should I be trying to save?

An M6 with an .85 is going to be more expensive than a standard M6. I've seen a lot of standard M6's priced at $1200 recently - don't know if they are selling. So I'll throw out a number of $1400 for the camera.

For the lens, it depends on what version of the Summicron you want (applies to both the 35 and the 50). If you want the most recent version of the 50, I'd guess around $2k, maybe $1.5k if you get lucky (used of course). Early models will be cheaper. You might want to look into the Zeiss ZM options for the lenses if you want a 35/2 or 50/2 for less money.

More like

- Leica M6 TTL $ 1,200-1,650 (with 0.85 finder on the higher end)
- v3 50/2 $900-1,400
- v2 35/2 $950-1,350

(see http://www.antiquecameras.net).

Then again, you can get a good M2, 35/2.5 and 50/2.5 Color Skopars for < US 1300, and nobody will tell the difference from the pictures.

Roland.

$900 (beater M6 i saw) up to $1500 (.85)

I agree with roland's pricing estimates and if you can live with an external meter or no meter, the m2 recommendation

With a 50mm f/2 or shorter/slower, .72 is fine (and has a better view of the 35mm frame) so you could save a couple hundred $ by losing the .85 idea.

M6 = $1000 for a beater
50 cron = $900 - 1700 depends on the version
35 cron = $1300 - 2700 depends on the version

You don't want a beater lens, get the 0.72x

I'd suggest buying a used 50 Summicron before the announcement of the 50 Summicron ASPH in May. I have a feeling that the rumored price increase of $1000 is going to drive more sales in the used department, and increase their value.

Thanks guys. I probably will stick with the .72 finder for the savings unless a good deal on 50 comes a long. If I can get the money together I'll try to get a good cron soon. My goal is to keep the whole thing close to $2000. Any thoughts on the elmarit instead of the cron? I should note that part of the reason that i'm looking to get a leica again is that I've been using an r 50 sum micron on my 5d mark ii, and love it. I also once had a leica m3 with 50 cron and still miss it, it was stolen about 5 years ago and I've been through many cameras from the contax g through the rolleiflex f, 5d etc and nothing has quite filled the leica void. I think it took seeing the 50 cron on my 5d to remind me how much I love leca lenses.

Thanks,
John
