I like the fact that the shutter dial doesn't go round and round. When I'm working fast, I like to know that when I hit the end, I'm at 1/1000th. I know where to go from there without taking my eye away from the viewfinder. If the dial went round and round, how would you know what shutter speed you landed on without looking at it ? It may be minor for some but very important to how I shoot.

I'd have gone or would go for the MP in your case since it would be the most seamless when using with earlier M's.

MP if you want a meter and can live without AE. I love mine and I can honestly say they feel just as solid as my M2. The M6 is a different beast, but I am keen on the smaller non TTL/M7 cameras.

I have not handled a Leica which has anything over the modern MP really. Far, far cheaper tho so if you don't need/want a meter it would be fairly foolish to get the MP based on utility - The M2/3/4 would make more sense.

If I could only have one, it'd probably be the MP.

However, I think the AE of the M7 would compliment your manual Ms nicely. Battery dependence is not a big deal when you can just tape a spare battery to your strap.

In the end, I vote other (ZI) so that you can have something even more different as well as a magnificent finder. You can spend the extra money on a ton of film and processing.

I prefer erring towards things that are the same, not different (personal preference), so when I wanted different VF mags, back ups with different films in etc, I got MPs. Dials go the same way, winder levers feel the same, I use the same metering techniques (no AE) and I get very few issues because I am always doing the same thing. even with lenses... more Zms, bec they handle the same, have the same fingerprint (largely) etc. Consistency! I would say work with AE with your Ms or dont. I periodically take readings and get a feel for the light. I set exposure for a light level that I lodge in my brain and so when bright light leaps into the frame, I know my shadow values are still there. Might then take a second frame after knocking off a stop or so. I don't like the way AE on simple cameras (not clever SLRs) easily gets fooled by backlighting. I am finding that by understanding my shadow values and averages i am getting better exposures. If I were to shoot AE one minute on a Z1, then a M7, then try shooting a MP I would be all over the place. Checking the light periodically has become part of my routine and I have to say it is working rather well.

Back on topic, I commented on the MP. If I was to be really specific, if it suits you FL needs, the MP-3 is magic. that would be my 'one M one lens' body, with a 35.

To my mind the look of the mp is ruined by the battery compartment,Id go for the m7,just to have something new to think on.

You'd have to say the M7. It won't be your last film Leica, not if you shoot B&W. Quite a number of people are going back to film after a digital fling. It's an image thing.

I understand John to be a well-seasoned Leica shooter, so I doubt that he is concerned with how the battery compartment might "ruin" the look of the camera. I was more surprized that he isn't bothered by such a thing as reversed direction of the ss dial, something that I would call a more practical concern. I don't see John putting his cameras on a shelf and admiring their look, but rather using them.
