Neopan 1600: Status?

Yodabashi (East) in Shinjuku just called to say the 40 rolls I’ve ordered have arrived and are ready to collect.

I wonder what the expiry date is and just how long after that date it will keep in the freezer?

This is terrible news as the 1600 (at 640) is a mainstay of mine. D3200 is very different and does not offera full stop over 400 speed films with no grain penalty, but instead a lot more speed with a large grain penalty.

Maybe the Japanese don't want to honor contracts based on prior $ values and will discontinue 1600 until it isn't so painful to sell to the US. ;-)

Thanks, tlitody.

Here's the result of a little research I have just done regarding prices. I have initially used Acros in 135-36 as an example because that seems to be available everywhere, and converted all currencies into AUD using the Google currency converter. And I have ignored shipping cost for the moment.

Fuji UK: GBP3.14 = AUD5.07
Freestyle (USA): USD4.19 = AUD4.23
Japan Exposures: JPY10374 for 20 = AUD128.59 (AUD6.43 per roll)
Vanbar (here in Melbourne): AUD11.30!!

Still cheapest in the US - however when we look at Neopan 1600 (Super Presto in Japan), it is not even listed at Freestyle or Vanbar.

Fuji UK: GBP4.36 = AUD7.04
Japan Exposures: JPY5720 for 10 = AUD70.90 (AUD7.09 per roll)

Fuji UK would charge me GBP14.95 to ship 10 films = AUD24.14
Japan Exposures would charge me JPY1500 = AUD18.59

So the landed cost of 10 rolls of Neopan 1600 in Australia would be AUD94.54 from Fuji UK and AUD89.49 from Japan Exposures

In the UK we are blessed 7 dayshop which is in Guernsey(tax free)
I can get my hands on Fuji 1600 for £35.90 for 10 rolls
And fuji 400 in 120 for £23.50 for 10 rolls. (They still have stock.)
Not much help to you though as hey won't ship outside of the UK and Eire. Prices include shipping.

But you are in OZ which means you're bound to have a relative living in London who can get it and ship it onto you.

Can you offer something to substantiate your claim? I love to think you're right, but the evidence sure points to the film being discontinued.

Jim: Substantiate the discontinuance.

It's all hearsay and drama that we've all been hearing so far. This is how it always goes down with any film rumor, unfortunately.

What evidence? Official announcements are always made on the Japanese site and it is clearly not mentioned as being anything but in production.

No argument from me. I can't prove what I think, and that's that the film has been discontinued. All I know is that two big U.S. film retailers (B&H and Freestyle) are no longer stocking the film (B&H insists its been discontinued) and it also looks like Fuji has stopped selling the film in Europe.

From what I read on APUG, both Fuji and Kodak produce master rolls of film that are about 3 feet wide and one mile long(!). If so, hard for me to believe that Fuji can sell that amount of Neopan 1600 in Asia alone.

There is a simple solution to all this, why doesn't Fuji (either corporate in Japan or Fuji U.S.A.) issue a press release on what's happening with Neopan 1600?

Fuji Europe list it

http://products.fujifilm.eu/products/analogue_photography/photographic_film/index.html

I think it's long past time that those in the US contact Fuji USA and ask them why supply is short in the US. It is the resposibility of Fuji USA to promote and supply to the US market. Just because they don't doesn't mean the film is dead. Especially when everyone can see it's freely avaiable around Europe and the Far East. It is an internal US problem. I suspect probably caused by devotion to Kodak meaning demand in the US is less for fuji film per black and white photographer than it is in other markets. But it could also be that Fuji USA are incompetant.

I don't see anything "hearsay" about it:

Fujifilm
USA
Neopan-1600 135-36 Professional Black & White Print Film

B&H # FUN160036Mfr # 10348579
Discontinued

Bolding, mine...

Sad - t'was a great film, this...

And since when were B&H the spokes person for Fuji USA or Fuji Japan.
Has it not occurred to you that it is B&H who have discontinued it and not Fuji Japan. And if B&H say they can't get it, that doesn't mean Fuji Japan don't make it. The problem is an internal USA problem. Contact Fuji USA to get some facts instead of pouring petrol on the rumours.

The B&H website may be incorrect -

A similar thing happened a few years ago when Neopan 1600 was listed as discontinued, rather than "out of stock."

This is totally hearsay, dude. B&H regularly lists things as discontinued when they aren't in reality. Ain't even close to the first time they've done it too.

They aren't the arbiter of availability for everyone.

<snip> I think it's long past time that those in the US contact Fuji USA and ask them why supply is short in the US. <snip>

Excellent thought. I once called Fujifilm USA in a panic because both B&H and Adorama had been out of 35mm Neopan 400 for 2 months. Not only did my rep know the actual facts, he explained them to me. Then he told me that almost everyone except B&H and Adorama had the film in stock. He was 100% correct.

I sure hope you're right.
