New York, New York

I was in NYC for about a week and a half this past august and spent a lot of time just wandering and shooting.

Great series Morback.

Thanks! I hope to have something decent of my years in NYC before I ship back out.

Somebody was asking about that guy recently. There's a feature about him on the lens blog, one of those "must-see" thingies.

I wish there was a place to see pictures by him. I bump into him rather frequently (when in Manhattan - Midtown), but I've never seen him shoot anything.

Maybe it's performance art?

Helen should grace us with some more images. She has a very nice eye.

Thanks!

At the last NYC Meet-Up we talked about Louis. Seems like pictures of him are posted big time on Flicker. A nice portrait of Louis taken at Coney Island was also published in B&W magizine.

Most recently I ran into Louis on a stormy day at Strand and introduced myself. I asked about his gear, availability of poloroid film, and about having spares for his obsolete cameras, and then he showed me a portfolio of street portraits that he has done over the years. The poloroid double exposures were very interesting. Louis insisted on taking my portrait for free.

For fifty years Louis has made his living shooting street portraits. Louis told me, "If it was good weather, I'd be at Rockafella Center at the Christmas tree making money." Louis was and has been generous, and told me he has helped many people by teaching them how to earn a living like himself. Although I had my Leica with me I respectfully did not take a picture of Louis.

If you want to see Mr. Mendes' photos, just ask him. He usually carries a portfolio and is more than willing to show them to interested people. Be forewarned that several are a bit racy. He's obviously got the double exposure thing down, and he is a nice guy. He's seen it all, including plenty of guys wandering around in Manhattan with a Leica around their neck trying to surreptitiously photograph people. He'll tell you to get a big camera. :)

Helen; Simply wonderful photos. (Hope you were warmly-wrapped for the Polar Bear Club moment!)
