I mentioned in a thread a few days back that I was headed to Newfoundland in August and got some really good advice. I was hoping to get a little more by starting a thread.

I will be staying with family near Marystown on the Burin Penninsula but I will probably have a few days for photo trips. Any must-see locations?

Feel free to post photos in this thread as well if you'd like, it'll help get me excited for the trip 😀

Go to St. Pierre, which is close. A taste of France in North America. If you can go to gross morne, which although much further, is spectacular!

Do you know Felip on flickr? He lives in/near St. John's, is a nice guy, and would be able to give you some insider scoop as well.

NL is on my radar, but we need two weeks to do the trip (including Cape Breton Island in NS) or else it's not worth it for me.

Make sure you get screeched in ...

I would love to, but this will be a pretty short trip... and a lot will be spent with family. My parents retired out there and my sister followed soon after. 8 days won't be long enough but it's all the vacation that my wife and I can overlap.

Make sure to hit up George Street before you leave the city. Great spot to party...

You could also take a trip to Rencontre, and Pool's cove. The ferry leaves from Bay L'argent. The scenery along the south coast is quite spectacular. Take a day trip to Terra Nova national park too... Kayak in Newman sound.

After five summer vacations on 'the rock', and despite a thousand negatives, I've only just barely scratched the surface of the photographic possibilities.

Fogo Island, Salvage, Bonavista, Gros Morne, and the twisty road from Port aux Basques to Rose Blanche are some of my favorite photographic locales, but I'm still just finding my way around!

Quick trip out of St. John's north on route 20 past Pouch (Pooch) Cove to Cape St Francis. The road turns to dirt north of Pouch Cove, but keep driving until near the end. Then walk to the Cape where the Canadian Coast Guard helicopter landing pad is. My wife and I spent a day sitting out on the cliffs there watching humpback whales jump, a female humpback nurse a baby, and quite a few meinke whales (along with quite an array of seabirds), some of them swimming in the water just beneath the cliffs. Great spot.

I just came back from two weeks in Newfoundland. We spent a week in St. John's and a week in Port Blandford.

I had a great time taking a Gatherall boat trip from Bay Bulls and seeing the Witless Bay refuge. Lots of scenic photography to do of islands and icebergs, and puffins are awfully cool.

Some of the towns are awesome. My favourite drive was the Baccalieu Trail.

Cape Spear is a must. Signal Hill in St. John's is a must if the weather is clear.

The colourful houses known as Jellybean Row in downtown St. John's are gorgeous. We had a rented apartment in one on Gower and Prescott. It was a great location.

If St. John's is in anyone's cards, I've got to mention the hike up through 'The Battery' to Cabot Tower on Signal Hill.

dfoo can probably elaborate and/or correct me, but the Battery is a ragtag collection of houses and cabins built on the side of a steep, rock-stewn hill, by people who couldn't afford 'proper' real estate way back when. The hike winds it's way uphill through backyards until you reach the top of Signal Hill, which itself provides a fantastic view of the Harbour and Cape Spear in the distance.

On a lighter note, and completely baffling to a Torontonian like me: in St. John's, cars will stop to let jaywalkers cross the street. No kidding.

well if you've got a spare minute in St. John's you should head over to Quidi Vidi. Beautiful.

here are are lots of beautiful spots in and around St. John's 🙂 The downtown area, Signal hill, Cape Spear, Petty Harbour (where Orca was filmed), Bay Bulls, Tors Cove and related communities (a family of Sea Otters live at Tors Cove; spectacular), the east coast trail has many beautiful and rugged hikes if you like hiking. If you are going to be in that area ping me 🙂

Great to see pics posted, especially B&W because that's what I want to shoot but I'm bringing a body for color film too (K64 and Ektar 100)

Sainte Pierre may be an option afterall, the ferry is close to where I am staying. I'll need to renew my passport first because it's a territory of France.

I'm heading out on my yearly trek to Newfoundland in a couple of days. Driving to Sydney, then ferry to Port aux Basques. Two weeks at our cottage, probably Fogo Island in there, then driving up the Northern Peninsula and crossing the strait to Labrador, then back to Ontario. I'll catch up with you all in September!
