The 35 AFS would be a perfect match for my D40. I haven't yet seen it in the shops though..

I got mine on Thursday (pre-ordered it from Adorama) and it works well on my Fuji S5 (D200 equivalent - but better 😉). For $200 it is a pretty amazing lens.

Im considering getting one for my d300. There is a lot of chatter about this being good on the FX. I'm holding back due to its high distortion and CA. But we will see.

I haven't seen distortion yet, and the CA doesn't affect me. I've never used RAW on the Fuji S5, I've set the camera up for just OOC JPEGs and that deals with any CA. I've been using a 17-55/2.8 but this 35/1.8 has been on the camera since it arrived. It focuses down to 0.3M...

The distortion of this lens is noticeable on the graphs, anyone notice it in real photos yet (I haven't, but only viewed a few dozen photos so far).
How would it compare with a RF lens (CV, Leica, etc.)?
I like that it has the AFS for the low end models like my d40x.

WARNING! Digital can be a long dark rabbit hole. I got an ad for an Advanced Nikon DSLR seminar. I called about it. Sounded really good. Until I said I had a D200. Long silence, then the instructor said, we don't talk about that model anymore.

Actually I have virtually no interest in digital. I bought a new S5 because it was dirt cheap from the UK and it gives me excellent OOC JPEGs that require almost no post-processing. I use it for family snaps & flogging stuff on eBay, that's it. I have no interest in buying/upgrading digital - this is more than I need.
Well it's plastic. 🙂 But, it is pretty well made and has a metal mounting plate and it works just fine. As a person who uses high-end Leica film gear I'm thrilled with this lens, what more can I say?

From the examples I've seen, I'm not excited about the bokeh wide open, but I'm a bit picky here, also don't care for most CV lenses wide open, so ti me it's kind of an f2.8 AF prime, still interesting though.

Kevin I bought from Ffordes of Scotland. I paid US$550. Their prices are inclusive of VAT so you need to take 15% off to figure the price to you in Germany. I just checked and they still have them - your price would be £424. 🙂 The VAT comes off in the shopping cart interaction after you enter your credit card/shipping address and the cart realizes you're not in the UK. I strongly recommend them, they also sell Leica gear and are highly rated on the German Leica forum. My experience with them was great, the camera was here in Boston 3 days after I ordered it.

Mine should be here tomorrow along w a D60. Should be a nice light normal lens outfit and with a spare battery and big SD card, it's all I'm going to do digitally for a long time.

Sorry, but that's wrong. Buyers from the EU have to pay the VAT of the country of origin, if it's a EU country. But 15% VAT in the UK is still better than 19% in Germany.

Thats exactly why I bought a d200 feels nice in the hand (metal) and not to big like my work cameras that are canon 1d111s, use it when on holiday with a 24mm 2.8 and a 85mm 1.8. I will have to have a look at the new 35mm as I have been close to buying a 50mm in the past.

I was going to buy one, but after learning about the CA I decided it's not for me. I always shoot RAW and I refuse to pay for NX just to fix a problem created by Nikon. I'll stick to my 35/2 AIS.

OK I'm a bit confused Philipp. Where does the VAT get paid? Does Kevin, who lives in Germany, not pay the UK VAT but then pays the Deutsche VAT when it crosses into Germany? Or does he pay the UK VAT and then the other EU countries say OK he's paid a VAT it can come into this country... 😕
