Noctilux standard lens on M7..ND filter for daylight

Hello All,

My Noctilux is going to be my standard lens on my M7. I'd like to shoot between f/2.0 and f/4.0 with 160/asa Fuji in the daylight. What ND filter would allow me to shoot these settings?

My math might be wrong (it was in my original post ... I am watching boxing at the moment and my mind is numb). So hopefully somebody will double check the math.

I used sunny 16. Please adjust accordingly if you use "sunny 11."

Looks like you need a four stop filter since the M7 has shutter speeds to 1/1000 right?

Since it's OK to overexpose negative film by at least a stop, you could easily get by with a 2 stop filter. A three stop filter would be OK, though.

That, of course, is predicated on your shooting in bright, sunny conditions.

why not get some ISO 50 film and shoot wide open? or even 25.

I think use a ND8 filter then you could take a photo at f1.0 of iso 100.

I have a ND8 filter (3x factor ?), used it once and never again ! The vignetting was horrible ... Better use some Velvia 50, KR-64 or PanF at 25ISO, IMHO.

yehh, I have tried various ND filters on my noctiluxes, and have eXpeienced a loss of image resolution... @ f/1 or f/1.2 DOF thats a big deal... in which case...My Jupiters Look better wide open🙂

OP wants to shoot at ISO 160.

Assuming broad daylight and the sunny 16 rule applies: 160 @ f/16; 320 @ f/11; 640 @ f/8; 1280 @ f/5.6; 2560 @ f/4.0; 5120 @ f/2.8; 10240 @ f/2.0.

The fastest speed on his M7 is, nominally, 1/1000. You must halve 10240 four times to get a shutter speed under the 1/1000 limit on the Leica M7.

Therefore, OP needs a 16x (2 to the power of 4) neutral density filter to shoot at such apertures under direct sun at f/2 to f/4 using ISO 160 film.
