Hi!

I'm thinking about buying a Nokton 40/1.4 lens. R-D1 let's me pick the correct lens for 21/35/50mm objective for the rangefinder. How does using a 40´mm lens affect the situation in the viewfinder?

Also any tips where to get a Nokton 40mm lens (or other lens which price as new is under 400 euros) second hand on the internet? Preferably around 200 euros or cheaper.

Do you have any other recommendations for a lens (about equal to 50mm as in film cameras) in this price range. Ultron? Color Skopar?

What's the main difference between these three lenses except different aperture?

Thanks!

I use the 35mm frame lines when I have the 40mm Nokton on my RD-1. I wear glasses and the lines seem to work much better than I expected when I first began using the Nokton with the RD-1. I'd say pretty accurate for my use. Other here may say differently. The RD-1 and the Nokton 40mm are an incredible combination.
Da' other lenses. . . kettle o'worms would be an understatement. I have the Ultron 28 and the Skopar 21 "P". (With the Skopar I use a 28mm finder.) Both work well for me. It's a real personal "thing" around here and I'm sure you'll get a lot of great suggestions and opinions. Good luck.

How does that work though?

A 40mm lens on the RD-1 is gonna effectively be a 60mm lens if you take the 1.5 crop factor. (It is 1.5 right?)

Actually I've found the 60mm FoV to work very well for me. I shoot a lot of "people images". If you haven't done so already check Rich Cutler's site www.richcutler.co.uk . A lot explained there. A very well done site with an incredible wealth of RD-1 information. Also Sean Reid's "Reid Reviews" has some good related information about the RD-1 and lens reviews. It's a pay site but I think well worth the subscription fee.

90% of the time I use my 40mm Summicron on my RD-1.I like the slightly longer than standard and find the 40mm fl fits the 35mm framelines perfectly.

I use a 40mm Minolta M-Rokkor on my RD1. The camera's 35mm frame lines work perfectly for this focal length. Almost spot on. The M-Rokkor would be my choice, but I don't have a 40mm Nokton to compare it to. Another thing is that the Nokton can be bought new, and the M-Rokkor cannot.

As to where to buy, I would recomend that you go to CameraQuest.com. Stephen has the 40mm Nokton for $349 US. Not sure what postage, and tariffs, to your house might be, but send him an email and ask. I'm bought several new lenses from him.

Take care,
Michael

The Nokton is usually the default lens on my RD1. The 35mm framelines work well, except when you get to closer focussing distances. But then you just have to take that into account, or switch to the 50 framelines.

The Nokton is great and you won’t regret getting it. It’s beautifully built, small and light. I have also used Ultron and Skopar but found their signature boring and sterile although they are both sharp and otherwise excellent.

That is where I get so damn confused... I want to think the viewfinder switch sets the FOV value for the lens chosen. All I do know is the VC 21 works great with the VC 28 metal finder at less cost than the 21D finder that is plastic. Why there is not a marking for 90 or 75mm FOV lenses is a BIG mistake though. If I keep mine long enough I will take it apart and mark it for those focal lenghts.

I was just reaquainting myself with my "new" Rd-1 I am going to keep now. Tell you what the 50 mm lines are too tight for my Canon 50 1.4 and 35mm too loose for my 35mm I still don't know what those numbers on the FOV thing are suposed to correspond with.

Tell you what though the RD-1 #2 rangefinder is SPOT on from close to infinity with this 50mm f1.4 wide open...
