New York NYC CameraPlusExpo 2016/ AKA January Meet-Up/ Camera Olympics

Part of this event is selling/swapmeet. As everyone knows I use Heliopan 2X yellow filters marked "Digital" to hit the sweet spot on my Monochrom. I have mucho B&W MRC filters that I don't use anymore in 39mm and 46mm (Leica).

Bring stuff to trade. Lets make a deal.

Good morning Cal, It's alway's good to have extra filters, I think this is
going to be a great meet.

Hmmm....I'm thinking we may have to "grab" both the balcony and the round table downstairs given the expected attendance.

Bob,

I've become a filter snob. LOL.

Important to know that in my apartment every cubic inch counts. Because I sometime carry three Leicas I have three of a kind, and basically I am spoiled by the Heliopans that I need for digital.

Do you see any big difference using the Heliopans?

Do you see any big difference using the Heliopans?

Bob,

On digital cameras yes. It seems the Heliopan filters marked "Digital" also have IR and UV filters built in. The IR and UV filters lower the noise and removes parts of the light spectrum that adds to clipping and overwelming a digital sensor.

On your D3 I would use a Heliopan filter marked Digital.

On my Monochrom the histgram does not lie. I'm able to shoot more to the right (increase exposure) without clipping or with minimized clipping for a better signal to noise ratio.

Also with my Monochrom I get broader histograms because it seems the shade of yellow of the Heliopan is perfect to match the sweet spot of the Monochrom sensor. A 3X yellow Heliopan is about the same grade as a 2X B&W, meaning the grading system of B&W is a darker filter on exposure alone. The 2x Heliopan is a lighter shade than the B&W 2X.

Comparing the filters under bright high contrast lighting shows a profound difference in performance that is very evident in the ten zone histogram and with the clipping indicators. Also know that for me this minimizes post processing which in turn minimizes digital artifacts. The Digital Heliopan makes the broadest histogram.

Basically I try to do as much as possible to optimize the shot at image capture.

The currency of choice is beer, though I'm sure anything alcoholic will work....look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.

Thanks! judges who take bribes make the world go round!

Bribes are good we say. LOL.

Seems like every year I try to open the envelope. Last year we had a cheap camera contest that became the main event. While this year we want to be Leica-centric, I propose having a "M6 Shootout" as a separate event.

The prize so happens to be a post Wetzlar era Leica M6 catalog as the trophy. Funny thing is that I don't mind downsizing, but I don't mind owning the honor of being a winner instead of just a guy with a ponytail. Know that I am camp-pain-ing my Wetzlar M6, and know that it features mucho accessories.

NEW "BRANDING" CATAGORY: "Maggie" bought me a gift of "B" magazine which is an interesting publication because it features no advertising, but each issue expansively explores a single company and its branding. Maggie bought me the issue that features Leica as a company. The magazine is of high production value and is well done. It covers the history, the mistakes, and defines the brand we all know and love.

Anyways in my Madhattan apartment every cubic inch counts so I'm offering this nice trophy/prize to the owner of the best camera that promotes the Leica brand, be it a collectible, a rugged user, or a new camera like a "Q" or M-246. Judging will be soul-lee about which camera presented will likely promote the Leica brand or increase Leica sales.

Anyways "B" magazine really teaches one about luxury branding in a boutique market and making and maintaining an exclusive market.

I will quote from a financial newsletter who used an obscure writer named Barry Hannah as a model as an exclamation point: "Nothing is more valuable than reputation. No amount of money can buy it. It literally is priceless."

Great reason for me to dig out my M6! But what lens 135mm or 35mm or both?

Steve,

The M6 is an unsung hero that is rather common. Bring both lenses. Let's create M6 Mania. While I think my black paint MP with 0.85 finder (also has 75mm frames stripped out) is a better/smoother camera there is something totally right with my Wetzlar M6. The metering on the Wetzlar M6 is more basic and crude. Perhaps because it is a bit rough like me it is why I like it so much. LOL. Later M6's had better metering that was more sensitive.

My MP has metering that I believe goes down to -2EV like a Gossen Luna Pro.

Since you might bring two lenses, know as a joke I will "market" my Fujica "Texas Leicas" to promote the small size of the M-body as part of my platform. Since it is an election year, and since Donald Trump is making a big deal out of Ted Cruz being born in Canada, I will begin the trash talking and state that my M6 was made in Germany. LOL. I hope that gets me a few votes. LOL. Real Leicas are made in Germany. LOL.

I think you will find the postcards I'm printing an interesting marketing tool.

BTW I believe I found the M6 catalog under the 59th Street Bridge with three retro issues of Leica Photographique International in my wanderings. Funny thing is that I found the M6 catalog again somehow in East Harlem. LOL.

Over 7 years ago I gave the 3 issues away as prizes for the first "Leica M-body Beauty Contest."

Steve you might consider making up some crazy new cat-It-gory, and offer that printing set-up that you have been trying to recycle as a prize.

What about a "Monster Camera" competition?
