Oh I like to be at the seaside... oh I do like to be beside the sea

I do not think I posted this one before. If I did, shoot me. Yes, I am fond of night shots of the boats and ships around here, in the Columbia River and in the drydock or wharves. It is what there is around here.

We have an anchorage in the river alongside the town. Sometimes eight or more large cargo ships wait there to go upstream to unload or load. Loading is grain and soy beans brought by rail from the interior to Kalama,WA. Timber is loaded at Longview, WA. This is one of the ships waiting to go upriver. She is low in the water so she is loaded and will be unloading upriver. She is facing dead on to shore because she is swinging on her anchor. As the tide rises and falls the flow of the river changes from flowing upstream to flowing downstream. Tides are felt up to Portland but are only about an inch there. They run about 8' here. So ships face downstream on rising tides and upstream on falling tides. Yes, this will all be on the final. ;o)

The USCGC Eagle, a W II war prize, the former Horst Wessel, was ported here for a few days. She is the only sailing ship in our military which actively sails. The other sailing ship is the USS Constitution which is docked in Boston and has sailed only once in the last forty or so years, and then after an extensive refitting. This ship in crewed by cadets at the USCG Academy in New London, CT. The rotate through as there are more cadets than spaces on the ship. But they all get their time aboard, working and sailing this glorious old sailing ship, she is a barque.

If you work on the water as do many in this town do, fishing, you love "The Coasties." They are the guys who will come and save your ass when you are clawing off the lee shore in a really bad storm, the "Git 'er done" guys.
