Eagle, a W II war prize, the former
Horst Wessel, was ported here for a few days. She is the only sailing ship in our military which actively sails. The other sailing ship is the USS
Constitution which is docked in Boston and has sailed only once in the last forty or so years, and then after an extensive refitting. This ship in crewed by cadets at the USCG Academy in New London, CT. The rotate through as there are more cadets than spaces on the ship. But they all get their time aboard, working and sailing this glorious old sailing ship, she is a barque.
If you work on the water as do many in this town do, fishing, you love "The Coasties." They are the guys who will come and save your ass when you are clawing off the lee shore in a really bad storm, the "Git 'er done" guys.
