I just returned from an epic adventure to Bali & Sumbawa. It was mostly a surf trip, but there were a lot of other journeys along the way and I shot tons of photos. Just wanted to share with all of the other film/gear nerds out there. The cameras used were a GF670 for the medium format shots, and an FM3a & EOS 3 for 35mm. Lenses: Nikkor 18mm f3.5, 28mm f2.8, & 55mm f2.8. Canon 28mm f1.8, 50mm f1.2, 300mm f4, & 500mm f4. Film stocks: Acros, Neopan 400, Tri-x, Ektar (just one roll, most of the color photos are the e6 stuff), Velvia 50, & Provia 400x. Some technical observations: the most used camera was the FM3a. I just had it around my neck everywhere I went. I think I'll probably be buried with that camera. The EOS 3 worked just wonderful; it was mostly used for the telephoto stuff. And I really, really wish I would've shot more with the GF670, the photos that come out of that camera just blow me away. What a lens on that thing. Anyway, nerd out & enjoy!

You are great at telling stories! You make something as simple as meal on the plane interesting because it's part of a story. Greetings from Jakarta.

Outstanding! You've taken us with you on this wonderful journey to Indonesia. I especially love the surf you experienced at the second destination, and the monkeys. And I can just smell those street-cooked meats and satay.

I also love that it's all on film! Thank you for sharing.

Excellent set of travel photos.
Two thumbs way up from me for recording all that on film.

I can guess which ones were taken with the GF670, but it'd be nice if you indicated which ones 🙂

They are great, but I wish there was some tight surf shots. With a 500 f4 you had the reach, didn't you? (I have never shot surfing before, so I could be wrong)

As a frequent traveler I pack light. How was it carrying so much gear? You must have had transport for the month. No backpacking around?

I didn't shoot any still photos of surfing with the 500, but on the last couple days of the trip I did use it on my 60D to shoot video of a couple of my friends surfing (guys you see in the photo series). That can be seen here https://vimeo.com/96363117 It works really good for video, there are some tight surfing shots in there.
As far as carrying the gear around, we basically rented a room over there for the whole month & used it as a home base to keep all of our stuff. When we flew to the other island we left a lot of gear behind in the room (the friend I was traveling with is a photographer as well and he had even more gear than me, haha). So we were able to travel light on our day to day excursions.
