I can see that, good point. Still and all, Ricoh did think to put in that tricky internal neutral density filter so that you could slow shutter speed down a bit OR more likely shoot a bit wider open to try to increase bokeh - but I did the math and DOF at f/2.4at ten feet is like 22 feet or something ridiculous like that, so no way you can do nice shallow DOF effects - but as you say - if that's not what you're after, then it is hardly a drawback.

I *think* that it would be important to me - but I guess I could give it a miss if some of the other major things (for me) were in line. Internal viewfinder is the biggy - and price of course. Both camera and external viewfinder are currently way outta my league pricewise.

The Color one was at 64iso. The B&W ones were all 1600 with minimum noise reduction. I really don't like the "smooth" look that noise ninja applies for high ISO images. The noise on the GRD at 1600 is very "grain" like. Mine probably looks less noisy because the image is resized. That is okay, since I hate to look and scroll with full-rez images.

Ok I now understand. I though there was a trick for the color one. Regarding ful rez purpose, I totally agree with your point. I just did that to share here with no intended artifact. Here attached the same picture resized.

Regarding the noise, if you filter it mildly it may be good (see the full res filtered one in B&W) which sound good to me. I may share some neat image profiles if you want. I may also compare normal shoot and cleaned ones if you want. The plastic look come from luminance Y over denoising parameter. when applying cR and cB parameters you can be much stronger if you want (but overall not that much). I noticed also that when converting a denoised color to B&W, you do not have to apply any color mask (and specifically a Red one!)

Is that new attachment a resize from original or is it a crop? For some reason, the grain still looks much bigger than the sample I put up...

A resize from the original. But manual setting underexposed by a half stop (at least what the camera said).

Bill, are you sure that's not just simple motion blur from her hand? There's no more such thing in the other regions, or not even on her arm,elbow.

Yes, I do think it is motion blur, on second examination. I mentioned that later on in the thread - my bad.

sorry Bill, i didn't read the whole discussion until now.

You do have a valid point with the optical viewfinder, though. 28mm is not wide enough to just shoot without seeing a frame around the subject. Not for me, at least.
200$ for an external viewfinder?? Is it gold plated and signed by HC Bresson, or what???
 
You can get around that $200 / £130 ouch by using viewfinders for old RFFs. I was considering a GR-D a month or so ago (before I decided film and scanner were the way to carry on for the moment) and saw finders going for about £20-30 on eBay.
 
You can also get the mini-finder from Voigtlander. It displays the 28mm 3:2 lines.

The wide-angle distortion is revolting. After using 28mm lenses (Elmarit, Voitlander) on my M6, there is just no going back.
Our eyes are used to this distortion, but back before these lenses were widely (pun intended) available, it was considered grotesque. (I have photo magazines from the 1940's where they complain about this distortion.)

With these tiny chips, the images make me sea-sick.

How to frame with a CV12, 15 or 21 even with an M7(like) camera?

True, however I think Bill is arguing that the GRD is not a suitable replacement for the pocketable GR because with an external finder is not pocketable anymore!

I don't think the GRD is trying to compete with M-Mount or LTM cameras
 
I ordered one yesterday for 428€ which seems pretty ok to me (price wise)

I read all the terrible reviews and also seen some of the most fantastic images on the web, I went for the images and not the review.

Probably isn't the brightest, fastest and sharpest camera around, but it's got style, takes good pictures and doesn't come with built spice racks and other ladida stuff

Theres also some rumour about a possible senseor replacement which Ricoh offers, but this is from a Japanese web-site, and is difficult to comprehend even with translation packages so this might be total bull****... but one never knows
 
At least no-one will steal it!!

maybe you can use it as a deterrent against wild animals. I hear they can react to bright colours.
 
Ok, I got my GRD yesterday. It really is a wonderful camera, almost perfect ergonomically ! I'm still playing with the settings though. What are your default settings (saturation, sharpness, contrast, resolution) ?

I don't have an external viewfinder yet because i'm hesitating between the voigtlander 28mm metal viewfinder and the ricoh viewfinder. Are the framelines visible on those VF when wearing glasses ?

Also I noticed the flash socket is not aligned in the axis of the lens. As a result, is there a misalignment between the image in the viewfinder and the picture taken ? Or does the ricoh viewfinder is designed to compensate the misalignment ?
