As you know, Americans don't speak any foreign languages.

I like Wladimir's pelican-flag avatar so much, that I've upgraded my own, with a nod to Nationalist iconography.

I should mention Ned's as well....

I do not know what this means, so I will do what I always do in this situation: smile, nod slowly, and hope for the best.

A Gandolfi with a Cooke PS945 lens befits photographing Czars.

Hi Folks,

I feel truly honoured by this thread and thank all favourable comments. My heart gets much strength from you.

On the other hand folks whose comments were not so favourable will be punished once more by another prizing of the Kiev cameras, right here and now. If you cannot take it anymore, and entretained the idea I would just disappear, kindly don't torture yourself any more, please, just stop reading my postings, starting with this one as first exercise.

Among other activities, I have been indeed playing at home with a Rolleiflex, whose clear and big screen, blowed my mind. It is still pending use, but much of my first enthusiasm about it faded away. Why ? Not because of the Rolleiflex which is a marvelous tiny MF camera, but due to the need to find an additional night light companion. Somehow the Kiev didn't feel appropriate. The Kiev is a system camera, which in my mind is associated to the possibility of more than one lens, and in every case the Turret finder fixed on top (even for a clear cut view of the standard lens)

Something of the like happens to me with my Olympus system. Although there is nothing wrong with going to the street with an OM and a single lens, this is still something to get used to by me, after years of going out with 5 to 7 lenses.

And, just wayting for the right occasion, I have a superb Lynx 14 which I thought it could match the place of night companion for the Rollei. So I went to make all arrangements for both cameras, until I noticed a critical problem with the Lynx.

In my two user Kievs I have placed original Kiev diopter attachments allowing me to use my eye without my glasses. With the Lynx I have to use my glasses. The superior viewing of the dioptered Kiev dragged me back home.

Now there is a RFF friend and expert in Yashica cameras, whom I would like to specially address in clarifying that I am aware I am comparing apples and oranges. A real comparizon should have been with the Lynx versus the Kiev, without any diopters on the latter - therefore everything written here is just a matter of pure personal convenience.

Incidentally, before getting the Rollei (which was a family present) I considered once again going for any of the most expensive film rangefinders. This is very much of a theoretical exercise for me, living in Israel - a country where I cannot go to any shop and hear-feel-see and touch any of the most advanced rangefinders.

So taking this factor into consideration, Kievs remain my daily user cameras.

But let's have it clear: I am not saying they are better than all others. Ceirtanly they have the best rangefinding system inherited and comparted with their Contax mother. Ceirtainly I do have my own doubts as weather may I find a similary quiet shutter and winding. And ceirtainly there are a lot of things the Kievs and Contaxes lack, many of them very basic ones.

Still the Kievs are best FOR ME, and part of this personal equation is due to their low price combined with my capability to disassemble them and perform a basic CLA. Yet along the last years my preference have passed several tests of doubt, comparizon, reasoning, as this time.

That's all by now my friends. I hope those liking my posts have enjoyed once more, and those disliking them but looking for another session of maso have found too what they wanted.

Cheers,
Ruben

... Ahhhh. What's RFF without a raucous Ruben rant? Glad you're out of hiding Ruben and that you're alive and well and lovin' that Kiev.

Hallo again Ruben :)

Curiously, I have also just found myself with a tlr again - or at least I hope I have, as the package is somewhere between here and Slovakia. In my case a Flexaret, having a tessar-type lens.

Wonderful to read that your still raving on the Kiev. Will be standing by for your experience with the Rolleiflex. Glad all is well.

I'm glad you're alive and well. Maybe you should quote Mark Twain when he said "The rumors of my death (capture) have been greatly exaggerated"

Bill
