Actually I also use a PowerMac G4 (Mac OS X 10.2.8) with the scanner (more frequently than the Windows machine)
It has an Adaptec 2906 on board. Zero issues with CT and CQ.

Hello,
someone wrote me asking where to buy (in EU) a replacement PMT for a ScanMate 5000.
Jack, I seem to remember you found a source?
Thanks anyone!

Jack, is that SM5000 in working condition?
I recently got into 4x5 and that's more than my P120 can handle, and so I was considering a cheap drum scanner. I'm a student so my budget is somewhat limited, and while the scans you guys get from the SM1100 looks phenomenal (of course your skill as operators plays a big part too!) it's outside my budget which led me to look after a SM5000 instead. Do you have any experience with the 5000? Is it comparable to the SM11000 apart from the resolution?
I hope I'm not too OT.
Cheers!

Excellent, Jack!
I'm very curious. The SM5000 sounds very interesting, and should be easier to find.

I'll be looking forward to your comparison, Jack! I guess 5000 dpi should be sufficient for my large format needs
Well, it was a good price!

SM5000 does not have pattern in shadows (my sample) known from 11000, register error is typical for Scanmates (bearing?) and slight red cast in shadows (correctable in post).

Can someone email or send me on an other way the monitor program for the scanmate? I have to realign light source to scanning head and I want to calibrate the apertures. I would also need the maintenance manual.
Waht else do I need to communicate to the scanner for maintenance? Some special cables? I read somwhere, that I need to make me a cable but can´t find instructions.
Thank you all and best regards,
Sebastian

No one has because it is in the scanner firmware. Just make cable and connect with hyperterminal or putty:

I have no idea - I use my Mac Mini only as remote control of an old laptop that drives the scanner under XP.

Scanmate -> Adaptec 1480 -> Centrino laptop with COM port PCMCIA and wifi -> Mac Mini 2010 with VMware Fusion -> Photoshop with my NegInverter plugin
Very comfortable but wifi on laptop is slow - have to find solution for quicker file transfer. USB wifi card doesn't work (broken connections). Maybe better take fanless mainboard with pci riser and pcmcia-pci host (Ricoh) or pci-e SCSI card from Adaptec (low profile) - tested and works.

Scanmate 11000 monitor program and maintenance
Scanmate 11000 monitor program and maintenance
Hello Guys!
Thank you for all your help. Jack send me the manual and after a lot of trying with different computers I found out how to make a connection to the scanner, so I want to write a short explanation for everyone:
I did not get it to work under Windows 7 and also not under Mac OS 9.2, don´t know why.
I finally did it under Mac OSX 10.6.8 with an ordinary Mac Book. Others report that it is also very easy to do under Windows XP but I have no XP here.
First of all, one has to make a cable. I found one with RJ45 on the one end, and RS232 on the other laying arround in my cellar, but after all it had not the right PIN connections.
Everything we need to make a cable is an ordinary Cad5e network cable and a separate RS232 connector. We can buy these things in an ordinary store for electric parts.
After that, the network cable has to be cut on one end. The leads have to be identified and then have to be soft soldered to the RS232 connector following this pattern Jack wrote in an other post:
RJ45 ------------ RS232
2 (orange)------- 3
3 (white-green)-- 2
4 (blue)--------- 5
What we also need is an USB to Serial adaptor and the drivers.
Now we can start:
- Connect the USB to Serial adaptor to the computer/Mac
- Install the drivers
- Restart the Mac
- Connect the selfmade cable to the scanner and the adaptor. The scanner has to be turned OFF!
- Load from the internet this little program (goSerial):
http://www.furrysoft.de/?page=goserial
- Start goSerial, tick the marked button and select the displayed values. You also have to select the USB to Serial connector you use under "Serial port". If this does not show up, there is most probably a problem with the driver:
- Select "Ok"
- Tick the button in the left upper corner right next to the button we used before. Now a red cross is shown over this button.
- Now turn on the scanner with the thumbwheel for the SCSI selector on position "8".
- There we are, now we can speek to the scanners firmware.
- To understand what to do we need the manual. Email me, if you need it.
I found an other instruction for Windows XP in the Yahoo scanner group:

Hi Bob,
I just set up another computer to run the monitor program; here is a
step-by-step procedure (XP only, I can't help with your MAC). Start with the
cable connected, dip switch on the scanner set to 8, and the scanner off. In
XP, go to start, all programs, accessories, communications, Hyper Terminal,
click OK. A new window will open; name the connection and click OK. In the
next window select the COM port that you have the cable attached to, click
OK. Another window will open, select 9600bps, 8 Data Bits, Parity none, stop
bits 1, and flow control none, click OK. At this point, the Hyper Terminal
should show connected with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner, NOW
switch on the scanner and the program should start. If the program does not
start, set up a new connection using a different COM port, if it still doesn
't work go to the refrigerator, get a cold beer then go outside and enjoy
the nice CA weather!

Big Problem, fibre optic cable
Big Problem, fibre optic cable
Hello everybody!
I have now a really big problem! I wanted to purchase new fibre optic cables from Sensor head to PMT and from transmission bulb to light tube. ABC-Scan told me they have enough to sell me some. When I removed the long one for transmission, I destroyed it, unfortunately. And now ABC tells me, they can´t find any more cables.
Now my scanner is useless! This is a BIG PROBLEM for me. Has anybody an Idea where I can find a new cable or a company that will make me one for a price that does not get into thousands of euros?
Any help and suggestion is very much appreciated
